Forums - Sales - DQ11 sells over 2m copies in 2 days! (Retail sales)

Wow! That's really impressive and great for the series!

I have to say, this really surprises me and also makes me wonder how the VGChartz community knew this would be such a smash hit. I just don't get it, everyone has been saying this will outsell big Japan names like Splatoon and Final Fantasy, meanwhile I'm over here looking at the sales and the only games in the franchise to sell well are either extremely old, or a "one hit wonder" DS game as well as a very successful PS2 game.

I'm usually the first guy to say "You can't just look at sales! Look at the context!" But this is a case where I just didn't see a success on this scale coming , maybe it's because i'm not really familiar with the games at all, everyone on VGC got the sales so right. Like literally everyone was acting like this was near MH levels, and apparently they're not far off. I just don't get it though, the only contemporary Dragon Quest to sell so well was from 09 and all of the other DS games did well but not that amazing.

I guess there's just some things that ignorant old me can't foresee. Maybe if I was familiar with the franchise I would have seen this coming. Incredibly happy for the game : D

I think it has to do with familiarity of the games.

If you just look at all the recent Dragon Quest games, it paints a very misleading picture. The "one hit wonder" DS game (Dragon Quest 9) you're talking about was actually the last mainline Dragon Quest game until 11, and the PS2 game (Dragon Quest 8) was the last before that. All those other DS games were just remakes of much earlier DQ games. Dragon Quest 10 was a weird MMO like Final Fantasy 14, which is why it sold low comparatively.

If you look at just the mainline DQ games:

6 (1995) - 3.19 million
7 (2000) - 4.10 million
8 (2004) - 3.61 million
9 (2009) - 4.35 million

Main Dragon Quest games always sell extremely well in Japan, and it's been a pretty long wait for 11.

DQ is one of the RPG releases in Japan! Those are some pretty damn good numbers, especially the near 1 owner in 5 on PS4.

...though, stardoor has already given you a good explanation.

DQ series still so strong in Japan :0

After seeing people claiming the PS4 would sell more copies han the 3DS version, I'm glad the 3DS managed to edge it, especially since we're at it's end life.

When it was first announced people said what's the point of the ps4 version and that it was a waste of money and resources.  People said the 3DS version would outsell it 3/4/5:1 and that ps4 version wouldn't even hit 1m lifetime.

The negativity as usual was a lot worse on gaf then here but I'm delighted to see the ps4 version sell so well.  Including digital and future Asian/western sales ps4 version will beat the 3DS.

Considering the discrepancy between PS4 and 3DS digital sales it's very possible that the PS4 version already outsold the 3DS version.

I knew it was one the big rpg  releases in Japan. I guess I just figured that all the clutter of 1.6-1.7 million sellers meant it just had a few golden releases haha.

Another thing that I considered but didn't think would really affect it - the split fanbase. To be honest, I thought that because the PS2 version was so old, there wouldn't be many fans left on the console, sort of like MH assumedly, so I thought it would be outclassed by the DS sales. But, it seems like a lot of fans sticked with consoles! Which is good. The decline of consoles no doubt affected sales, but the sales are still great and almost matched! Like wow .. this will probably outsell FFXV on PS4 in Japan so quick! I didnt think itd be that big

I just hope Monster Hunter Worlds turns out the same. I think Im one of the only big MH fans looking forward to that one ... lol

Always knew 3DS version would sell more... now people are just going to pretend they never expected the PS4 version to sell more. Watch it.

Well my original prediction was 3DS version outselling it to the order of 3:1 considering the install base is more then 4:1, and the cheap price of the 3DS version compared to the PS4 version. But then I later flip flopped to the PS4 version barely outselling it.

So overall both versions exceeding my expectations. However the LTD battle will be interesting.  Install base legs vs new buyer legs.

I'd argue that there are more people that will just stick with either console or handheld than switch their prefered gaming platform for just a game, even if it's their favorite. I'm almost sure that the majority of PS4 buyers have not owned a DS or 3DS and they just waited for the next big game after the excellent DQVIII. Many people have only ever played DQVIII so they're definitely not commited enough to get a handheld just to play DQIX.

That's why I think MHW will do absolutely fine on PS4. It might not outsell a possible 3DS version but I'm confident it will outsell a possible Switch version.

I just assumed that the smaller home console climate, and the fact that the game moved to handheld meant that some fans might have just bought the 3ds version. But obviously you're right looking at these sales, whiich is why i was correcting myself.

It has a great chance. People are still underestimating MH on console.
PS4 with a upgraded online feature can atleast help this game. A worldwide release will surely benefit MHW. That's some of the people here are ignoring.
It may not outsell the handheld counter part in Japan but MHW might outsell the handheld counter wordlwide if market and done right.

OT:
A bit disappointed wih PS4 hardware sales. I think the fanbase is already there with DQ heroes and DQ builders.
