Forums - Gaming Discussion - What are some things you don't like in videogames?

Got my list right here:

1. Female characters which consist of enlarged mammary glands with legs. Note to game industry: LOSE THE %#?! 14TH CENTURY GENDER ROLES.

2. Male characters which consist of an enlarged phallus/sword/gun with legs. (See note above.)

3. The chatty/witty/saucy sidekick, who ends up displaying all the horrible gender/racial/sexual/national stereotypes not covered by points 1 and 2.

4. Cinema-to-game videogames. Ah, the horror, the horror...

5. The triple-dip final boss with a ridiculously overpowered third form who has the time to deliver a 15-minute preliminary monologue about his/her massive Evilocity, although for some reason your player-character never has the time to heal or gear up.

6. Genre clash. This is when a perfectly fine action game decides to play a dice-rolling minigame, for no apparent reason than the designers ran out of ideas and decided to torment players instead of doing their jobs.



Around the Network

Good gameplay, I only like brilliant graphics...

Seriously:
Stealth
Horror
Escort
Backtracking
The thing in Star Ocean where you have to run around the very edge of the map for half an hour to get 100% of the map
Quick deaths
Long distances betwen check points
Games where you have to have a strategy guide to know what is doing
Stealth missions shoved in the middle f the game for no reason (GTA SA, going into Mad Dogz mansion)
Horror levels inserted in the end of the game, even though they give a good twist in the story and gameplay, but we don't play platformers for horror missions
Stupid NPCs who get stuck (in RSV 2 I have had to quit twice after checkpoints so it can reset the position my squadmates so they aren't stuck, even though they are quite clever normally
Half non-linear games, ones where it is basically linear, but with a few split paths and you have to investigate both so that you don't miss anything
Games where you can miss important stuff without knowing, and the only way to get it is to start the whole game again
Punishing difficulty

I'm sure there are one or two things that I am missing from that list, but there are many things that I don't like

@ slorgnet: I assume you are reffering to DMC4, I think that was only put there to show how amazing Dante is by simply destroying the dice



Things I don't like
1) Short Games
2) Add ons that cost you money even after you spent fifty dollars for what you thought would be a complete game

Sega: Dreamcast (40) , Saturn (25), Genesis (50), Masters System (10), Game Gear (20)

Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)

Atari: 2600 (18) , 7800 (10), Lynx (10)

Easy games, toned down casualized games (i.e zelda, mario)

Games without original, in depth storylines

Games with too much gameplay and not enough cutscene

 

 



Games without horses, suck. Period.

That's the weirdest thing i've ever heard as a complaint. What's your idea of a great game, Dragon's Lair? that's like 99% cutscene and 1% gameplay.

I hate game that are either easy or don't have a difficulty level that can scale up the difficulty greatly. Games tend to be much longer when you die 200 times before you reach the end.

 A great game to me is like MGS2. At least half the game should be cutcenes and the other smaller half should be gameplay. The cutscenes also shouldn't be too action heavy (some is ok), I like a lot of heavy dialog scenes aka planecape torment.

It seems like you would prefer an interactive movie over a game by how you describe it. In all honesty, maybe Dragon's Lair is for you. Or maybe a book. After every chapter do some pushups and then continue reading afterwards.

What did you do back in the 8-bit era when stories were basically non-existant?

What did you do back in the 8-bit era when stories were basically non-existant?

 

Back then I was a kid so I only played for fun and didn't care for stories. Now that I'm an adult I require more sophisticated games with stories that are worth following and weren't written for prepubescent teens or kids. I used to love mario games but I can't stand playing through Mario Galaxy simply because it doesn't treat me as an adult with it's 100% gameplay focus and almost non existent storyline. I can't suffer through games anymore unless there is a good amount of cutscenes that tell a good story. There is the added benefit to the narrowing of my tastes that buying games are much less heavy on my wallet now.
