Production of New Nintendo 3DS units have ended in Japan, according to a notice on the handheld’s official website.

The current lineup of 3DS hardware still in production in Japan is as follows:

-New Nintendo 3DS XL ($200)

-New Nintendo 2DS XL ($150)

-Nintendo 2DS ($80)

The end is slowly approaching.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

The price point likely encroached too much on the market that the New 2DS XL is aimed at. It's a shame about those face-plates, though.

Considering that 3DS XL is more popular in Japan, this totally makes sense.

I'm pretty sure the xl model was outselling the normal one like 5:1 or something in Japan.
Now with the 2ds xl occupying the same price point while having the bigger screens, there is even less need for the original size there, so this move is good on Ninty's part.

Those faceplates will be missed tho :(

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

heh, didn't even realise New 3DS and New 3DS XL were separate things. Why would anybody not want the XL model?

Size. Some people prefer something more compact and portable.

Well unless they want to change their mind and get the larger one, they'd better go out and get one quick then

Yeah. But I don't think the 2D/3DS has much life left in it, even in Japan. Once Pokemon drops, it's game over.

Some ppl prefer the smaller size. Plus gotta collect all those faceplates.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

RIP little buddy, It still remains my favourite 3DS unit.

DPI 240p on a smaller screen looks better, or less horrible.
Size/weight, the New 3DS is less fatiguing to hold, it is also more portable.
Looks, the New 3DS is generally matte, and therefore feels and looks better to some people (me).
Faceplates, you can switch the faceplates on the smaller model, but not the larger one.

Also the smaller model is cheaper.
