I agree with Phil Harrison.
As someone who lives in Central Europe i can't agree with this. More and more people (mostly for their kids) buy consoles here because it's cheaper than a pc. And it was always a part of the world where pc was dominant (and it still kinda is).
Aeolus451 said: Oh please.. That's a nice little spin on the situation. Sony markets towards the broadest range of gamers out of the three and it's great sales around the world prove that. MS is trying to reach more people with their windows shop and it might actually reach 'em with that approach. Nintendo hyper focuses on marketing and tailoring their games towards kids and gamers who want a strong nostalgic experience from the games they play. |
The key difference between your analysis and Phil Harrison's analysis is that Phil is talking about broadening the range byeond gamers. As far as you are concerned, you are correct. However, that does not mean you are correct at the expense of Phil's point because that is not the case here.

That's a weird thing to say, I don't see anyone but the loyal Nintendo fanbase buying a Switch.

My girlfriend bought one. Only other video game console she has owned is Playstation 2. She is 20 so in her gaming mind, Playstation is to her what Nintendo is to me. Now you know of one person that is not a Nintendo loyalist that bought Switch.

They don't need to broaden their audience. They sell way better because they're actually up to date with technology and offer content. Nintendo needs to consider new approaches since their hardware sales are at a steady decline.

I don't know her though. You could be just making it up. Until the Switch gets past that 15-20 million mark we can't say that many people outside the very loyal nintendo fanbase are buying it. The first 10-15 million sales for any console will be reached by just the harcore fans and people who just have to buy every new piece of tech.

The problem with that is that nintendo canters to a niche portion of gamers and it doesn't have the kind of reach both sony and ms have being companies that have a wide range of services/products. Nintendo can't match the appeal or reach they have. Let's see nintendo match them before we start talking about nintendo broadening the gaming audience beyond sony or ms.
Commenting on this is somewhat hard. On the one hand, he is right. Nintendo is getting people into gaming that possibly wouldn't have gotten into gaming otherwise. On the other hand, the Playstation brand is constantly getting stronger and consoles generally sell better than ever before. If the Xbox One had not came out, the PS4 would likely outsell the Playstation 2. While most of this is probably because of an increase in popularity, it's arguable how much of that increase is because of the Playstation brand. Sony could be doing things to get non-gamers into gaming, we don't really know for sure. Everyone starts as a non-gamer before becoming a gamer, so it's unclear if Sony *specifically* are really getting people into gaming or if it's just gaming attracting new people.
