Forums - Gaming - Will there be a market for a N64 mini next year?

I don't think it's going to happen. I'm inclined to agree with OdinHades on follow-up mini consoles for NES and SNES. That, or a return to the Virtual Console on Switch.

If it did happen, I'd be overjoyed, however.

Nintendo would really want to work with Microsoft to at least get GoldenEye on there. I doubt MS would want the other Rare games on there, as Perfect Dark, Banjo, Conker, Blast Corps, etc. are in Rare Replay. But GoldenEye is a unique case, as absolutely no one is benefiting from it at the moment.

I feel like the 64 game catalogue will be too valuable for a mini. I agree with others that they just might make a second NES or something. If they do make a 64 mini, the list of games might be a point of contention for some.

That's good point, but on other hand they could include less games than for NES and SNES Mini, maybe around 15, and of course N64 Mini would be more expensive than SNES Mini, probably $100.

I don't think it will happen. A N64 Mini would actually require some work, as those titles don't run as smoothly and problem-free on emulators like SNES and NES titles. So Nintendo either has to make a perfect emulator or has to make changes to the games themselves. Both requires some work, while NES Mini and SNES Mini is pretty much just a SOC with an Emulator and some ROMs thrown onto it.

I just don't see Nintendo investing too much into this kind of thing. I think in 2018 we will see NES Classic Mini 2 with other games than the first one, in 2019 SNES Mini 2 and so on.

Nintendo isn't emulating entire game library's here. Only a few select games, so they can focus on improving the emulation quality for just a couple of dozen titles.

Now if they were emulating hundreds of games your argument might have some merit.

I think it's the last one they can feasibly do. The last one they could sell as 'retro'. GameCube feels more modern because the graphics actually look like something, but more importantly the sizes of games will get too large while N64 games are usually still relatively small. There will be an N64-mini, maybe even next year already, and it'll be the last one of the line.

Gamecube certainly doesn't feel modern... It's 480P~ resolution certainly hasn't aged well.

Plus emulating the gamecube is certainly more difficult on low-end ARM SoC's that these micro-consoles use.

^ I could see something like this on a N64 mini.
Just not sure its enough.

I know they would work out the rights for some Rare games on there. Microsoft seems to be pretty chummy with Nintendo right now.

Projected price: $89.99

They're priming us for a $100 GC-Mini :)

I hope it happens, these mini consoles will end at some point though so...

Although if it does happen I bet I'll be disappointed in the game selection. These are the ones I'd want at minimum:
Super Mario 64
Pokemon Stadium
Pokemon Stadium 2
Pokemon Snap
GoldenEye
Perfect Dark
Star Wars Rogue Squadron

Stadiumn 1 and 2 would suck.  I wouldn't want to use either games with the stock loaned Pokemon built into the game.

n64 mini could happen next year, but yes I also think 2018 will be a new version of the NES Classic, I mean they left probably 5-10 million sales on the table by only making so few, so it would make sense to bring it back. I could see a new NES Classic, maybe a few more games, comes with a second controller, and with longer controller cords, selling for perhaps $80 like the SNES Classic.

I think they will bring out the n64 mini though, maybe 2019. I would definitely buy that. Games list:

1. Super Mario 64 *

2. LoZ: Ocarina of Time *

3. LoZ: Majora's Mask *

4. Mario Kart 64 *

5. Diddy Kong Racing *

6. Donkey Kong 64

7. Paper Mario

8. Yoshi's Story

9. Super Smash bros. *

10. Killer Instinct Gold *

11. Turok 2 *

12. GoldenEye *

13. Perfect Dark *

14. Banjo Kazooie *

15. Star Fox 64

16. F-Zero X *

17. Wave Race 64 *

18. Kirby 64

19. Star Wars Rogue Squadron *

20. Excitebike 64

21. Jet Force Gemini *

22. Pilotwings 64

23. Bomberman 64 *

24. Ogre Battle 64

25. Pokemon Stadium

26. Pokemon Snap

27. Blast Corps *

28. Turok 1 *

29. Banjo-Tooie *

30. Mario Tennis

31. Conker's Bad Fur Day *

There's 31 possible games. Of them I think Nintendo owns 18, obviously Microsoft through Rare owns a decent amount of them too (8 I think). I don't like all those games but just throwing out possibilities, I do love plenty of them! If we could get a 20 game N64 Classic I'd buy that in a heartbeat. It'd be a 3d nintendo and early FPS dream machine, which is exactly what the n64 was.

And who said they should change the controller???? That would be the worst decision ever. It wouldn't be an n64 then! I personally loved the controller at the time, I mean moving to only have two prongs and a second analog stick instead of the C-buttons was a good move, but at the time the controller was awesome! Love that z-trigger!

I starred the 20 I would probably most like to see, though I think I only picked 8 Nintendo titles but no doubt Nintendo would make at least over half of them Nintendos titles.

Well, there's certainly a market, but judging by the number of NES and SNES classics Nintendo brought/is bringing to the market, I don't trust Nintendo to bring enough of them out to actually satisfy that market.

Here's what they should do:

1. Super Mario 64
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
4. Donkey Kong 64
5. Mario Kart 64
6. Paper Mario
7. Super Smash Bros
8. Star Fox 64
9. GoldenEye
10. Perfect Dark
11. Banjo-Kazooie
12. Banjo-Tooie
13. Conker: Bad Fur Day
14. Diddy Kong Racing
15. F-Zero X
16. Mario Party 2
