Forums - Sales - Xbox 360 On The Skids Retailers Consider Dumping It (Australia)

The 360 has yet to "fire its salvo" this year. If NG2, Banjo Kazooie, Gears II, Halo Wars (etc) come out and its still selling badly - then MS might worry.

As someone pointed out, sales have risen year on year. It doesn't matter at all that its currently being outsold by the PS3.

Both 360 and PS3 are still overpriced and until prices come down further we will not see 20 million sold in a year on either system.

IMO the bulk of the 360's salvo was already fired. Fable 2, GTA IV and Gears 2 are the platform's best hope this year. I think this will be the platform's last good year while still getting crushed by PS3 and Wii sales (so far even PS2 sales beat the 360 this year).

Nearly all of the games which were popular on the original XBox already saw 360 sequels. The only 360 / PC semi-exclusive XBox game left which sold well and still hasn't received a sequel is Fable! (Counting the multi-platformers, there's still Starwars and GTA left for this year, but that's it for sequels to well sold XBox games!) So there isn't much ammunition left to push XBox fans towards upgrading to a 360. Technically there's not much room to "Wow" potential 360 consumers neither, I honestly believe GTA IV and Gears 2 is as good as it's going to get on the 360. And I believe Motorstorm 2 and Resistance 2 improvements will demonstrate how much headroom there's still left in the PS3.

Instead of having anticipated games like Dragon Quest, Tekken, Gran Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy sequels available within the first year of worldwide release like was the case for the PS2, Sony used the oppertunity to facilitate the introduction of some high quality and successful (million seller) new franchices like Motorstorm, Resistance, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword. And only a handful sequels to less anticipated games which did well on the PS2, but not the best aces they have in hand by far. This gives them time for production costs (hardware losses) to drop and more time for the games which are really crucial and highly anticipated by PS2 fans to be better polished for the new technology.

The best sold or best rated PS2 exclusive games are nearly all confirmed to receive PS3 exclusive releases including Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, The Getaway, Jak & Daxter, God of War, Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Tekken, etc. Sony has all these aces still in hand, and when they play this hand many PS2 gamers will be pushed to upgrade towards buying a PS3.

In addition to the highly anticipated sequels, Sony also has games like White Knight Story, Eight days, Eyedentify, Afrika, LittleBigPlanet, Team Ico project, etc, etc, these also are new promosing yet still unproven efforts, but which may attract new people. Home and PlayTV are also new services to tap new kinds of consumers.

IMO the 360 doesn't stand a chance.

PS3 vs 360 sales

In 2007 PS2 was the top selling console, even outselling Wii, so that's really nothing major.

Wasn't that 2006 (PS2 sales did really well christmas 2006, even beating 360 North American sales)? I thought the Wii did beat the PS2 for 2007 (The PS2 didn't do well for Japan, although much better than the 360, mass Wii adoption there).

Not sure what Japan has to do with Australia, anyway:

2007 YTD:

NDS - 492,000
PS2 - 241,000+*
WII - 242,000
360 - 159,000
PS3 - 155,000
PSP - 135,000

*PS2 does not include first 7 weeks of Q4 2007.

GfK Australia

Obviously PS2 sold more than 1k during the first half of Q4.

Dude! You completely contradict yourself in the third paragraph!!!! "Instead of having anticipated games like Dragon Quest, Tekken, Gran Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy sequels available within the first year of worldwide release like was the case for the PS2, Sony used the oppertunity to facilitate the introduction of some high quality and successful (million seller) new franchices like Motorstorm, Resistance, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword. And only a handful sequels to less anticipated games which did well on the PS2" Can you say SPIN???!!! So when Microsoft does it, it equals failure - yet when Sony does it, its instant win? Your contradiction pretty much renders 1st/2nd/3rd paragraphs void. Its either cancelled out or falls to logical inadequacies. Furthermore, it is completely ILLOGICAL to say that once a bunch of good games come out, you've RUN OUT of good games! It isn't a limited supply, infact even in worst case scenarios you get at least a second crack at most games before the generation is over. GTA - 3, San Andreas, Vice City for example! You had three goes at that game. Theres no reason not to expect to see Bioshock 1,2,3 Mass Effect 1,2,3 Too Human 1,2 etc on the console. IMO logic doesn't stand a chance.

Tease.

OK, I understand the confusion. I was thinking globally. BTW these GfK figures does not include 28K-30K of PS3/Bravia sales. So the PS3 sold far better its first year than the 360 did. 9 months of sales for the PS3, Microsoft reported 306,000 Xbox 360s total sales on the 21st of January 2008, roughly 22-23 months of sales.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Mike, the Bravia deal ended in January, I noted that in the LTD above. Sony said 20k of those were sold in 2007. At the end of the day 360 and PS3 sold pretty similar in 2007, although I expect PS3 to sell more in 2008.

I would think they are quite similar with a slight lean to American football. There are no rugby players to match the size and speed of American football players.

I'm going to put this down to your dire lack of knowledge of the sport of rugby.

This guy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonah_Lomu

Jonah Lomu. 6"5 125kg. One of the fastest accelerating atheletes per pound in the world.

Able to run 100 metres in just over 10 seconds.

There are plenty of examples. There are rugby players who are faster than American football players, and there are rugby players who are bigger than American football players.

The thing that must be taken into consideration however is that the athletes of the two sports have been conditioned and trained in different ways, to suit different needs. A rugby player needs to be build for endurance and stopping power. An American football player needs to be built for blocking power and evasive sprints.
