I see it's already been said, but yeah just use the Joy-con as a pointer, works pretty much the same as touchscreen then.

While you are at it, port Ni no Kuni to the Switch. The DS version of the original did so well in Japan that a port should be a no brainer(though it is a different game gameplay wise)
My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

You have a gyro-pointer. Use it.
Yees, drawing paths with it might be a tiny bit annoying, but so is drawing paths with your fingers, so there.

Worst-case scenario; just make it handheld only as stated by others. I think Nintendo fans are willing to accept compromises concerning tv-play for beloved DS franchises that rely a lot on accurate touch controls.
They can just focus on mystery solving where you have to write a number or choose out of the options from the scenario. Rather than those interactive ones.
Pocky Lover Boy!

It makes me wonder if some games will be the opposite, where they only work in docked mode.

I wouldn't mind that either. That would push the hardware to its limits if devs weren't constrainted to having the entire game run in handheld mode too.
They could do what every game that is somewhat like the Layton series does on PC or any other system that featured a point and click game.
Add a cursor to one analog stick and if something needs to be moved have the user hold a button down to pick up and let go of the button to place it. In portable mode just allow the selection of something a big enough clickable box for the not as precise finger compared to a stylus.
