 Is that true? because I have heard a similar story except that the guy only intended to float a littl off the gound except he was an idiot and drunk and ended up freezing to death by going too high (he didn't have a gun)

yes...at least that was the way I heard the story.

It contains the morbid conclusion to this tale....which I purposely omitted so as not to seem completely callous.  

It's an interesting modern proverb if nothing else.
