Assassins creed. Final Fantasy.

PES, I switched to FIFA

Far cry: The same game with others skins (4 and Primal).

Halo : I always liked halo a lot but halo 4 and 5 made me give up the franchise.

Killzone: I love Killzone 2 and 3, Killzone mercenaries was a good game but Shadow Fall is horrible, that game made me give up the franchise

Final Fantasy:...well after 10, I just couldn't play the games anymore. I tried, I bought 12, 13, mmos aren't my thing and FFXV was a half baked KH3/FF Frankenstein monster. To me, Final Fantasy is best represented by Final Fantasy IV, V VI, VII, VIII, and IX. I don't see them going back to a classic styled FF anytime soon either which is why I guess the Bravely team exists and Tokyo RPG factory. But, I'm just not a fan of the bland characters and bandwagoning that Final Fantasy is encompassing. I guess I just don't like the westernization of FF because up until really FFX and XI it was a very Eastern franchise.

Pokemon: I sorta fell off the Pokemon train after Gen IV. My favorite game in the series is still Emerald. Gen V, and VI kind of lost their soul for me. Gen VII is a step in the right direction and I want them to improve but when I've been playing what is essentially the same game for a little over a decade, it leaves a bit to be desired. When I see the fidelity of games today and the storytelling of games today, I only wish that Game Freak would try to incorporate some of that into the new pokemon games. Pokemon in Unreal Engine 4 would be amazing! And actually having a story driven game like maybe the Indigo League  would really interest me. I'm just at the point where I want Pokemon to evolve past just keeping a solid formula and gameplay.

Sonic: I grew up during the Gamecube era, that was the first console I owned. And a lot of games I had on it were Sonic games. Sonic Adventure 1,2, Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and I also had all the compilations, Sonic Gems Collection, Sonic Mega Collection+. And I fell in love with the older games. The 3D ones were good too, but for me Sonic games like 1,2,3 and Knuckles, CD, those were Sonic games. I could live with the Adventure games, they were fun for the most part. But after that...and Sonic 06 came out and then the boost formula took the fun out of Sonic, I haven't cared about the games since. Generations was a step in the right direciton but for me, it was because they relied on the good History of Sonic. That's why Sonic Mania is such a high profile game for me. That's the Sonic I know. Hopefully Sega allows the Sonic Manai teams to make another game with all new levels and 2D graphics.

Tales Of: The first Tales game I played was Tales of Phantasia on the Gameboy Advance. I loved it. It was a beefy game lasting about 40 hours for a handheld experience and the Story, regarding that it was a SNES game originally, was very fresh and interesting. The Magitech and Summon spells being a form of art, the battle system, it was just a great experience for me. I also played Symphonia which was the best RPG on the Gamecube and my second favorite JRPG that generation behind Dragon Quest VIII. Tales of the Abyss, Eternia, and even Vesperia were good games, no great games. It then came to a point where Namco Tales studio was pumping out these babies every year and they became stale. The same motifs began to be used and the same cliche character designs and personalities plagued the franchise. I just grew out of it I guess.

Paper Mario: I'm sorry, Paper Mario is terrible now. Ever since Super Paper Mario, the games shifted direction for the worst. They lost their RPG elements and became walking and button pressing simulators. There aren't any characters worth noting, combat is stale and unnecessarily slow, the charm is just not there and the games are boring. I might even go as far as to say that Paper Mario was my favorite RPG series at one point. But Nintendo ruined it for me. Which is why I am vowing to one day create an indie title that is a callback to the old paper mario games. I am fully willing to learn coding and unreal to make a game of this stature and quality, but I digress. Paper Mario used to be a game that had character, charm, and just overall fun...and now it's not...which leads me into the last franchise

Mario Party: Call me a baby, call me a kid, a loser, whatever Mario Party 1-7 are very fun party games and I still play them with my sibilings and cousins to this day. It's a guaranteed great time. Whenever the holidays come around and my family can meet up, we play Mario Party until the late night hours. It's a very nostalgic game for me. Specifically Mario Party 2,3,5, and 7. Ever since Mario Party 8 things have gotten wierd and overall, the games just aren't fun anymore. The thing that made Mario Party so much fun was screwing over your friends and making quick pacts one turn just to have them severed the next turn. The minigames actually had a reason to exist. You want to get coins so that you can buy items and help you get a Star. Now, there's no strategy to the games at all and they've become games that only kids can enjoy, and kids that haven't played a previous mario party to be exact. I just wish Nintendo would do at least a new Mario party compilaiton game with all the levels from the first 7 Mario Parties and similar playstyles. Yes, it's Mario Party, it isn't the biggest seller in the world, it isn't some AAA FPS with a hundred million dollar budget but it is fun in its most distilled form, to me anyways.

Dishonorable Mentions:

Golden Sun, Mana Series,

Harvest Moon, with Rune Factory being better in basically every way :p

Sure. Soul Edge/Calibur. Was a huge fan up until SCIII, which was still an alright game, but it made no sense to be PS2 exclusive after SCII had been so successful as a multi-console release. The franchise totally lost me with SCIV, pointlessly stuffing Star Wars characters into an arcane sword fighter, just to try and sell more copies.

I used to also be a big fan of the Need for Speed games, all the way up through Hot Pursuit II. Shortly after that they went "street racer", copying the Fast and Furious craze, and at that point most of the releases thereafter just kind of turned me off.

Likewise, while not AS into it as I was NFS, I used to be into the Ridge Racer series, at least up through RR4, but I bought RR7 upon first getting a PS3, and it honestly kind of sucked. I got rid of my copy.

Tekken I have a love/hate relationship with. Tekken 1-3 were great, 4 was hot garbage, 5 (especially the PS2 release) was brilliant. Tekken 6 was one of the main reasons I got a PS3 in the first place, and it was a massive let-down. I was so disappointed with it, in fact, that I traded it back into Gamestop a week after getting it, towards a pre-order for NSMB Wii (a much more worthwhile purchase). My roommate recently got Tekken 7, and so I've been checking it out a bit. Better than 6, though I miss a lot of the older characters. Utlimately, I'd say it's solid, but unspectacular. The series really kind of peaked with 5.

Final Fantasy is another major culprit. FF1 on NES was one of the first RPGs I ever played as a kid, and I actually beat it even though it was hard as nails. FF Mystic Quest, while not part of the main series, was one of my first new games after I finally got a SNES. FFII (IV), borrowed from a friend, quickly became my fav. RPG of all time, and FFIII (VI) was likewise pretty amazing. Upon later playing FFV on PS1, I liked that one as well, though not as much as IV and VI. But honestly, the series started losing me with the Playstation releases. FFVII, with it's anime aesthetics and setting, really didn't appeal. FFVIII moreso. FFIX was an okay attempt at "old school", and I appreciated what they were going for, but I never got super into it. FFX just completely lost me, and none of them since have held any appeal, which sucks, because I really loved the old school games.

It pains me to say so, but technically I have to also include Star Fox. I love Star Fox 64, it's one of my favorite games of all time, and I've been waiting for a PROPER follow up ever since. And all I've gotten, time after time, are releases ruined by ill-conceived gimmicks. At this point, I've kind of given up hope of ever getting a true successor to SF64, in THAT style, gimmick-free.

It's kind of a moot point, but Mega Man also lost me somewhere along the way. MM2 is in my Top 3 all time, and I like all of the classic NES MM games (and V on GB). The first few MMX games are also pretty solid, though I prefer the classic series. But I never cared for MM7 and 8, as I didn't care for the cutesy direction they took the series in. It was almost as if they wanted to differentiate it from the "darker" X series, so they went hard in the opposite direction. Either way, even though MM9 and 10 were a neat throwback, with all of the myriad of spin-off series before the franchise finally shit itself to death, I just lost complete interest.

The same could somewhat be said for Castlevania. Super CV4 and Symphony of the Night are two of my top favorites of all time. I like most of the classic CV games, including the Game Boy entries. I even appreciated what they tried to do with the N64 games, even though they played like clunky pieces of trash. I was also eager for the release of the cancelled Dreamcast game that was to star Sonia Belmont, I was actually going to get a DC mainly for that game. That's how into CV I was at one point in life. The handheld releases mostly held up through the early 2000s at least. But the 3D series lost me with Lament of Innocence. I really liked the idea of Sonia Belmont as the first in the family line, and then "IGA" had to go and decide that she wasn't canon, and that this tool-box he came up with, Leon, was instead. That game was crap, mainly because of the story. And the 3D games just kind of died for me after that. Lords of Shadow is barely worth mentioning, because it's not Castlevania. But yeah, another classic series that is now basically RIP for good reason.

I didn't care for the generic, nameless, no-Adventure-Mode having Wii U Smash Bros. game, but I'm willing to see what the next iteration might be before turning my back on the franchise. Same with Pikmin, with 3 being a colossal disappointment to me. I'll see what they do with 4, if it actually happens, but I have a bad feeling they'll likely continue the same bad elements from 3. There are probably others, but those mentioned above are the major examples for me.

This was a really good post and one that I almost totally agree with. Just thought you should know.

Final Fantasy for me. Was by far my favourite franchise, my top 3 games of all time are all Final Fantasy games even. It started to go downhill with 11/12 for me. 11 was an MMO so I don't usually count it as a main FF game, but it clearly inspired the very MMOesque battle system of 12 which I hated, so some credit should go to 11 for ruining what was my favourite series too.

Still had enough interest to get 13 and 13-2 day one though. Every franchise makes mistakes right? But nope, while improvements over 12 they were still no where near the quality I expect of FF. And now with 15... it's further away from the FF I loved than ever before

Haha, FF13-2 was exactly where i stopped with my day 1 FF purchases as well. Although that was the last FF game I purchased as well. I skipped FF13-3, FF14, and FF15. Although FF7-Remake has me excited. Still,  have this odd feeling that Square is going to find some way to destroy this classic, I think the majority of fans will still prefer the original, despite the fact that the characters don't have visibly connected appendages.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Final Fantasy. The franchise's quality is getting worse with each game since FFX. Yeah, I think XIII, XIII-2 and XIII-3 are better than XV, and those games were far from great.

Many games for me, most due to casualization of said series. I will only list my top disappointment(s) though.

World of Warcraft- It is my #1 game in my top 50, but not because of anything recent. Classic, BC, and WoTLK were so good by themselves that it tops my list. However the Cataclysm happened and it happened to everything. This MMO became less of one and catered to casual single players in the end. Booming populations somehow lead to a group finder tool, which lead to less of a reason to to socialize with anyone from your own server until raids. However if you are on a small server and in a small guild and relied on randoms from your server to fill the gaps you are SoL. A lot of people quit, and the ones left that had any success were elitist 1%ers. Pvp/raid groups became constrained within the elite, and so it became a join or die situation. No more were the random pvp groups formed to raid the enemy capital or Arena/BGs.

Speaking of BGs, all of them were made to be shorter and less complicated for casual play of course. Gone were the intense 1 hour WSG or 10 hour AV. World pvp was made pointless, one of the most complicated procedures to pull off is organized raids to attack/defend capitals, but its effectiveness is gone for the casuals.

Dungeons had similar treatment. I admit walking to the dungeon can be annoying, but group finder generally destroyed server camaraderie, a group finder for just the server alone would have been decent. The dungeons themselves were made easier, and some of the old dungeons even lost parts just to make them quicker. They could often last 30min to 1hour but the reward was always worth it, now its mostly pointless and a 10 min ordeal of mindless aoe. In fact dungeons used to require quite a bit of strategy much like raids, but being 5 man made it nice for the smaller servers/guilds to help each other out. The strat actually involved a hard time with all the roles, tanks actually did no dps and had to actually have skill to tank, healing also took quite a bit of effort. DPS had to really worry about aggro, or get instantly killed.

Anyways this rant could go on and on about other things like Professions, Alts, Leveling, Quantity of dungeons/BGs, Quests in general, Inflation, Epics, etc. etc. etc. But by the time I finished it would be a book, PM me if you really want to know more hehe.

TLDR: My favorite game was good, its bad now.

Another is Mario. While I loved all the 2D games up to SMW, I wasn't a big fan of 64. SM64 was alright, but it felt smaller and more repetitive than world. I despised Super Mario Sunshine, that game was boring, full of gimmickry, and repetitive as all hell.  Though Nintendo seemed to back to form with SMG1 and 2, at the time, arguably the two best games Nintendo had ever released. Then it was all NSMB and SM3D Land and World, which were alright, but WAY below the Galaxy bar. Now with Super Mario Odyssey they are saying it is like Super Mario Sunshine when what they SHOULD be doing is making the successor to Super Mario Galaxy with tons of variety and excellent rich level design instead of the shallow and repetitive level design of Sunshine. I hope Nintendo is not serious with this, and rather this is just a case of bad product messaging by some dumbass in the PR department. We need another 9.7 Mario game like Galaxy, not a 7.9 game like Sunshine.

The thing about Mario games is, that, in my opinion, they suffer a lot when they're more exploration-based than level-based. I think Mario games work better when they are a sucession of colorful, varied levels. So while I still think that SM64 or Sunshine are good games, they're less fun and below my expectations with the franchise. So, I'm with you, and I'm worried about Odyssey. I hope they prove me wrong with some E3 gameplays.

Though I still think that 3DWorld is better than Galaxy 1, but worse than Galaxy 2 XD. But that's just a not-so-common opinion about those games. I think this might be Nintendo fulfilling a fan request. A request I don't really agree with, which is making exploration-based Mario games. I can understand the reasoning behind that. I also hope that this is what Nintendo wants, not what fans want. I don't really think any company must force their creative ouput through their fans requests if they don't feel like it. Another not-so-common opinion.
