Forums - Gaming - N64 or PS1?

The better system is...

Nintendo 64 606 48.71%

Playstation 1 638 51.29%

Total:1,244

Well, for me PS1 is the greatest gaming console ever made so yeah. I mean geez, this was Squaresoft's GOLDEN age not to mention Symphony of the Night, MGS1, Resident Evil's, Soul Reaver, Wipeout's, Ridge Racers, the TEKKENS...all of the best games in their respective genres were on the PS1.

N64 by miles. I'd be tempted to choose the N64 if Mario 64 was the only game released for it but there were many, many more amazing games. Still love the ps1 though. I think I'd put the ps1 half-way house between N64 and Sega Saturn.

N64 easily. Its games have aged so much better. Almost all the Playstation games are nigh unplayable today.

And that controller is criminally underrated. It baffles me how a controller that comfortably and intuitively lets you access 6 face buttons and introduced innovations like analog controls and the Z-trigger is a bad controller. Yeah, it looks funny, but functionally, it's one of the best controllers ever at melting into your hand and letting you control a game without though.

For what it's worth, though, the 5th generation is easily the worst generation for consoles since the 1983 crash. You've got some classic in there like Ocarina of Time, but it was a major step backwards in terms of refinement from the SNES/Genesis battle.

Theres tons and tons of great PS1 RPGs that are still every bit as good today.

Meanwhile.... dispite loveing Zelda & Mario back then, I cant really sit down and enjoy mario 64....

the controlls and graphics are too off putting.

I dont agree with this at all, some things the N64 did where more impressive at its time, but they havnt aged as well.

PS1, quantity and quality. You can make a Top 100 games entirely filled with PS1 titles. N64 was like the Wii U, just a handful of good games.

PS1 games also have aged better than N64 games. N64 games look blurry and muddy with a limited color palette. PS1 (and Saturn) games are pixelated and have more charm.

The "N64 look" is just weird and doesn't hold up, there is more detail with bigger worlds, but they look like they want to be Dreamcast games on a far inferior hardware. They look like games in beta stage on a early Dreamcast prototype, that's the best way I can describe them.

PS1 for quantity, N64 for quality.

It´s so sad how far Square has fallen compared to that generation.

You're basically asking me to choose between Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII...I can't do that.

Oh, come on. N64 had at least two handfuls of good games ;)

In no particular order for me:

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber

Ocarina of Time

Majora's Mask

Smash Bros

Mario 64

StarCraft 64

Banjo Kazooie

Diddy Kong Racing

Mario Kart 64

Golden Eye 007

Perfect Dark

Bomberman 64

Yoshi's Story

Mischief Makers

Just off the top of my head. I'm sure I could find more if I tried, but this is what I could come up with as far as"games not on PS1" is concerned. That's more cartridges than you can hold in one hand ;)

What I remember not liking about the ps1 was loading times. I remember Quake 2 pretty much loading all the time, used to really get on my nerves. While n64 cartridges did have decompressing times it didn't seem as bad. It was nice to just slap in a cartridge and see the game appear immediately on screen and only a short wait to get playing. However that said the high quality audio tracks on many ps1 games were great.
