The better system is...

Nintendo 64 606 48.71%

Playstation 1 638 51.29%

Total:1,244

PS1. It has alot better controller and game library. Saved home console gaming at the time. It popularized adult themed games and gaming in general by steering it away from it being a kid's hobby. Sold an unprecedented amount of home consoles.

Both were awesome systems, but the PS1 just offered more.

you also have Final Fantast Tactics at 82,

That game deserves to be deducted 15 more points for that Wiegraf nonsense last battle.

Don't like either. If i had to pick, i'd go with N64 for Mario Kart.

Playstation. Of course. We got Crash, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest VII, FFVII-IX, FF Tactics, Breath of Fire III and IV, the later Mega Man X games, Suikoden 1 & 2, Silent Hill, Xenogears...

I feel like N64 just had Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie and GoldenEye. Don't get me wrong, all great games, but I didn't really care for shooters back then.

n64. ps1 was like the wii, some great games but a lot of shovelware.

I am surprised how many people vote N64 here, it had 400 games of which 40% were sport and racing games. Even the western Saturn library is better.

Not really. Most of the active community on VGC are Nintendo gamers.

OT: PS1 gave us Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, Resident Evil, some of the best Final Fantasy and JRPGS (and the list goes on). Which was a small part of my childhood. So that..

I did have some major fun with N64 though.. Goldeneye with friends was GOT.

N64, better graphics and great multiplsyer games.

Ps1 had metal gear solid, FF7,FF8 and FF9.

N64 had Mario64, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask.

Choose.

What I find so interesting about this matchup is that the two are so different, with each beating the other in different areas.

For example, CDs meant more space for games, but cartridges meant basically no load times.

Even their graphical approaches were starkly different, with the N64 going for a heavily filtered look employing high-end-for-the-time techniques like AA, trilinear filtering, and perspective correct texturing, while the PS1 had a sharper but more pixelated and jittery look.

I kind of like that they're so different though, as each is charming in its own distinct way.
