playing for a few minutes does not mean it's being hugely supported.

Ybarra already shot the data down as incorrect:

Of course, Ars also did that themselves in the article, admitting the data can't accurately be extrapolated for the entire userbase:

All of these sources of potential error make us uncomfortable using our data to directly extrapolate total sales or usage numbers for the entire Xbox playerbase. The numbers and ratios presented in this report should only be considered representative, sampled estimates of the online portion of the Xbox community, which could be significantly different from the total community of Xbox owners. You can try to multiply out our percentages by reported hardware sales numbers if you want, but we wouldn’t stand behind that extrapolation.

I don't know why this false narrative is going on in the thread about how BC was viewed by many here as a "game changer", personally I don't remember anyone saying that. Is this something one of the permabanned Xbox trolls said or something? Or "oh hey MS won E3 just with BC!!" uh, who cares? Thats their opinion. We had people here who claimed Sony won E3 a couple years ago just for Shenmue 3, a fucking Kickstarter, which isn't even close to release two years later. Maybe the two or three people who maybe claimed here that MS won E3 just because of BC, actually use the shit out of BC.

Most people here understood it was nothing but awesome fan service, which is exactly what it was supposed to be. Also, this number is going to grow a lot with the awesome Xbox GamePass service :)

I've read multiple comments about MS winning E3 b/c they announced backwards compatibility.

Exactly it's in no way a game changer.  In fact ps4 this year in xboxs biggest territory is outselling it but whopping 2:1 so that just shows the average consumer isn't too bothered.

Sony will likely have ps4 BC on the ps5 out the gate nullifying any advantage the next xbox could have.

You're going on a tangent. I'm just pointing out millions are using 360 BC and that should justify its existence.

Anecdotally its not uncommon to see people on my friends list utilzing BC. Especially when notable content hits GWG.

If pointing out how irrelevant BC is to changing the consoles sales fortune is a tangent then so be it.  Facts are facts and XB1 has been doing terribly this year.  Looks like those 300+ titles haven't done much.

At the end of the day 50% have tried BC but only 1.5% actually spend their time playing.  That star says a lot.  Jim Ryan vindicated.

BC for preservation is good idea.
But yeah... Sony has said this before that their own internal data showed that historically ppl weren't really using BC services on a significant enough scale.
so not surprising to see this news.

Didn't Sony say the same thing about rumble in controllers at one point also?

Well, even if half of those people just played bc for a few minutes while the other half use it regularly... That's still millions of people. Over 7 million people.

Are that many people going to bother to download a game, which depending on the size could take hours, only to play it for a few minutes? It's illogical.

"Users on XBL". What about users offline?

The console that basically requires xbl must have a pretty small demographic of offline users.

While I agree the majority of the Xbox One users are most likely online, since when the console "requires" Xbox Live? Last time I checked you can play all your games (non MP) offline... Hence some people complained enough for Microsoft to allow it...

I download plenty of games that I only spend an hour on, or two. Once about 6 months ago, me and some friends took out the n64 and played mariokart. Averaged out, that's about a minute a day.

Apologies, I believed my usage of the word 'basically' would sync with your assessment of "most likely online".

No, the fact that my assessement is that most people using the Xbox One are online does not make it a requirement (even "basically")... That's two different statements talking about two different things...

Here it is again (trying to make it clearer): You do not require Xbox Live to use the Xbox One (and play game on it other than MP). To me it does not sound like "the console basically requires Xbox Live" at all... So yah, no sync here :)

Everyone was so happy and said it was a system seller. (I thought this was a great thing, I still do, from the disc BC is awesome and everyone should have it)

But at the end of the day most people want new games. If all the 1.5% bought the console for BC (which obviously not)

That's 444,000 sales. Basically 2 weeks of PS4 sales.
