Forums - Sony - PS4: 1 In 5 Sold Are PS4 Pros

Super sales and as they say it's under a shortage. They've not met demand or even advertised it much. Sales will be big this holiday and I expect a $100 price cut too.

Well, in the end it will definitely do better than the 32X upgrade to the Genesis which in the end sold approximately 1/46th of the userbase for the genesis 🙂.

That's pretty good.

If Sony can now add in a 4K player I'm sure it'd sell a lot more.

Its bound to happend at some point I think.

A revised version (a PS4pro slim) with a 4k drive.

Yeah sure, they will announce a ps5 when the ps4 sales are very high, Fuck logic.

They won' annonce ps5 this year, or even next year.

They will also demolish Moore's Law as they launch a new consoles 3 or 4 times more powerful than Scorpio by 400 dollars since anything less than that would not look next-gen at all. Somebody at Sony will win a Nobel prize in Physics for that.

They will also commit commercial suicide. Generations end because sales start to slow down significantly. Not because the tech has moved on. A console selling 17 million units a year isn't ready for a succesor not even close. When the PS4 starts selling below the 12 million mark, that will be the time Sony announces the PS5.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Way ahead of their expectations? What were they expecting?

Not 1/5 of current PS4 sales. The thing is more expensive, sort of needs a 4k TV to get the most value out of it, and doesn't have a specific game that *needs* that extra power.

It'll never have a game that needs that extra power

Apparently this might be possible to add via a firmware update.

I'm not the most tech savvy but I'm still questioning is that even possible?  Is it not a hardware thing?

From what I gather there are a number of blu-ray drives that are actually capable of reading 4K blu-ray disks in terms of the hardware's physical capabilities. They just need to be programmed with the new reading process for 4K discs, and they should be able to do it.

And of every five PlayStation 4s Sony sells, Layden says one is a PlayStation 4 Pro, a laudable achievement given its $100 price premium, enthusiast target demographic and the nascency of the 4K television market (where it's real allure lies).

"It is way ahead of our expectations," adds Sony global sales chief Jim Ryan. "As with PSVR, and I suppose in forecasting these things we haven't done a very good job, the product is in desperately short supply. So that's one-in-five under severe constraint."

"All of the rumors of the demise of the console are very much premature," says Layden. "In fact if you're watching [sales tracker] NPD for PS4 and Xbox One sales, you put those together and console gaming has never been as big and vibrant as it is right now. And that's just here in the States." Zip across the pond, and the story tilts further in Sony's favor. "It's been pleasing that in North America, we've been 2-to-1 against Xbox," says Ryan. "But in Europe, it's really been fortress PlayStation by at least 3-to-1 in unit sales."

"It's also the breadth of type of games," he continues. "And once you get up in the heady heights of 100 million units, you're talking of a different audience altogether, where having this range of stuff like Detroit: Become Human and FIFA and Call of Duty and Star Wars, it makes the job a whole lot easier."
