Forums - Gaming - Holding onto PS2 and holding off on PS3?

Well people who own a PS2 or only just purchased a PS2 in the late stages of its life. Do anyone recommend they should wait until PS3 has a huge library of excellent games and PS3 is into its fourth year of its life with a install base of over 40 million world wide? So 120 million PS2 owners in the world a great number would be holding off on their purchase of a PS3 mainly due to the lack of having a HDTV because they are expensive. Standard TV's are really cheap to buy especially the wide screen ones these days. Plasmas require 10 times the energy of a standard TV.Little or no interest in Blu-ray technology due to Blu-rays only looking good on HDTV's. PS3 is still at a high price- "Sony PR spin try to claim PS3 is cheapest console on market". remember PS3console is priced between $400US to $500US. "Cheap" 40GB PS3 does not play PS2 games. PS3 has a growing library of games of current and future games. A $200 to $300 price is fair more attractive to the average man on the street.

I would recommend that this person should wait for the PS3 and or get a Wii if you like the sound of a $250 console and Nintendo classic games. PS2 still has a good three years of life in it and a library of over 2000 games to play.

""PS2 still has a good three years of life in it and a library of over 2000 games to play.
""

==> according to ur final sentence,
no need to buy a Wii
Just save ur money and buy a PS3 later

Time to Work !

blah

I would recommed holding off on a PS3 until the libary is stronger and the price is down a bit further.

I don't understand these threads.  Every individual is unique.  I wouldn't chastice someone for not buying a PS3 because I know there are some downfalls to owning a PS3.  At the same time it's a very good gaming console and also a very good media console.  It'll be like the PSP where it's hardware numbers should continue to pick up.

Ask yourself this you have limited finds you are looking for a gaming console? What do you buy a PS2 for $100 or a PS3 for $400? The choice is a no brainer.

This is a question Rock_on_2008 that shouldn't have to be asked. BC is a core value of the Playstation brand - and was axed to make the PS competitive. That's why I bought a 20gb PS3. I was serious about not buying a PS unless it had full BC. Have I used the BC on my PS3? You bet. The second game I played on it was an old school PS2 title. I just got a game to review that's a PS2 game and I'll be using the PS3 to play and review it - or maybe not.

In the end, I still have my PS2 and have no plans to get rid of it. I would love to get rid of my Xbox but can't because I have a few Xbox titles I love and don't want to quit playing.

I'd recommend buying a Wii and enjoying the current generation of games and maybe getting a PS3 mainly for Blu-ray and the free demos in 2-3 years.

If you already have a PS2, then yes.  However, I never owned a PS2.  The way I looked at it is I can get a PS2 for $130.  Or by using SonyStyle you can get the 80 gig for $400 and make interest free payments for a year.

For the extra $270, you get:

1.  A good game (I got Motorstorm, soon you can get MGS4)

2.  An 80 gig hardrive (no more memory cards, YAY)

3.  A PS2 and a PS3 (yes, it is not full backward compatible, but I haven't noticed any issues yet and it upconverts to 1080p)

4.  A blu ray player (hit and miss with this if you don't own an HDTV, but while it may not reach DVD levels, it is DVD replacement)

5.  Wireless controller (no more pulling out the game system to sit 5 feet from it)

6.  Much more reliable system than the PS2 (If you buy the PS2 and it breaks in 2 years where does that get you?)

I decided these were worth $270 to me.  But I've always been more on the cutting edge of technology.  Really though this argument has been beaten to death.  The PS3 is a great system.  No, it doesn't have the game library of the PS2 and people can argue whether the media functionality adds any value to them personally.  But it is worth the money.  But I understand why people don't buy it.

PS2 has such a hugely superior library, that it's pointless to get a PS3 without an HD TV. Once the adoption rate of high definition picks up, the sales may pick up.
