Forums - Sales - USA in recession - will gaming be affected?

Global recession = The expensive consoles will be in trouble but the cheaper consoles will do ok.

Why do you think a lot more people in America didn't run out and buy a PS3 on the release date?

I think a $600 console would never sell much, no matter whether there's an expected recession or not.

maybe - gaming is a form of entertainment so it's not really necessary so ppl may cut back on it

If there's no recession, why is the federal bank doing sudden interest rate cuts, and why is the government attempting to get people to spend more money by issuing checks to every taxpayer?

When I see financial experts saying a recession is very likely (or in some cases, that it's happening already), I see the situation as much worse than you guys are portraying it...

Thats just it, there is a lot of fear of a recession but personally I don't see it on its own. Sort of how I can go to the doctor and undergo chemotherapy but it doesn't mean I needed it.

If anything this fear of a recession is what will eventually cause one. And on that note there are political ties in this as well. I'm not saying every expert under the sun is corrupt or anything close to it, but the Democrats have a vested interested in making the economy sound bad as it helps their chances this election cycle not only for the presidency but to pick up seats in the house and senate as well. Meanwhile this rhetoric becomes the public perception and soon sure enough people are saving money for the "coming recession".

Like I said, I think there was a slowdown in progress to begin with, but there is some serious overreaction combined with a political atmosphere that is making this a self-fulfilling prophecy. A recession really is all about public perception, if people think things are fine they spend and there is no problem, if they think times are bad they save...so I don't think this is much of a stretch by any means.

You're probably right that it's partly a self-fulfilling prophecy, but I think you're overplaying the political bias part. Weren't the tax bonuses I talked about the decision of the Republican government?

Well I think you read into that too much, I wasn't absolving any party of blame, I was just pointing out that this is beneficial to the Dems. I'm pretty fed up with both parties right now tbh. Either way its pretty hard to know with a recession one way or the other what would have happened without the intervening political crap.  I think this is more BS than actual slowdown but there are no good ways to know for sure so there isn't a lot of point in debating it.

I will add that the republicans giving a tax bonus doesn't really mean this isn't artificial. Real or Artificial that tactic combats the problem.  Like I said though, I won't absolve them of any blame.

In the face of this recession, I'm making more money than ever! Still, video games have proven themselves immune to the financial woes of the rest of the world. I predict record profits for the games industry in 2008.

In the trunk of my police car, right now is an XBOX 360. I had to evict a guy from a residence yesterday who has nothing but a 13 SD TV, some clothes, and the 360. A FRIGGIN' 360! There was a dispute between him and his girlfriend about who the console belonged to. Gamers will sacrifice food, shelter, and common sense, for their games. Believe it.

Maybe these games will become cheaper!! lol
