Japan just has me sad with the way some of this games are starting to perform over there, and then we have mobile games with the worst bussiness practices that ive seen in any game (literally just gambling), making over 2 million dollars a month...

At least we still have games like Nier Automata or Nioh coming from there but even those games dont sell nearly as well as they deserve...

Yeah, it's really sad.
At least they still make great games and nowdays we have so much easier access to them so we can still play a lot of them even if they are not selling well on Japan because they still have a decent chance of localization.

Which game was you specifially talking about, though?

If you are asking me about the mobile games (making over 2 million a month) then this two:

I have played both games and i know they are good, but that bussines practices though... its literally gambling of the worst kind because even if you win you just get a DLC character thats incomplete because you need several copies of that same character to max out its ultra attack, (well at least in the case of Fate GO, i dont know if you need to roll the characters several times in Granblue to max or something, but there is probably a similar mechanic, since they always want you to keep rolling).

I want you to digest and really think about what im about to tell you...

- 40 dollars equals a 10 roll at a gacha (lottery if you are not familiar with the term).

- You normally want to get the best character on offer (which is normally limited for a period of time)

- This characters are 5 stars meaning they are the most powerful but also the most rare ones to get

- The chances of getting a 5 star (at least in Fate GO) is 1%

- That one percent only guarantees that you will get a 5 star NOT the specific 5 star character you want

- So divide that 1 percent between the 15 or 17 - 5 star characters that are available on the gacha at all times.

- Now you have a 0,0 something percent of actually drawing the 5 star character that you want...

Would you pay 40 dollars for THAT percent of chances of getting what you wanted? heck even if you paid and actually got what you wanted you still paid 40 dollars for an INCOMPLETE PIECE OF DLC!!!, i cant believe there is people who actually pays for that...and they dont only just pay... they break the bank (spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars and some people thousands upon thousands of dollars), there are stories of people who even sold their cars and wasted their funds just to get that "waifu" they really wanted...

This is literal gambling and it has those addicting effects as well, only that its way worse because even if you win you got something that isnt worth the amount you spent, at least in a casino you multiply your money.

This is not really rare, actually most games are like that nowdays, even the FF and OP games I played where like that, though they at least gave you good amounts of "gems" for free to try to get those, in fact on the FF one I have several of the best items without having spent a single cent on it xP

There was a game called Fantasica back in the day and the best chars were given out in event in very limited amounts, like 10 or 20, and people spent hundreds of dollars on those events trying to get them, which made it impossible to get otherwise and went on selling them for $1000+ after, actually I remember someone selling the char I wanted the most for $5000 as it was a very limited (10 copies) and old char which made it one of the rarest of the game xP

Well, Granblue is coming to the PS4, right? It can't get that bad on a console, we will probably be able to enjoy it a lot more the console version.

Bruuuuuuuh, I'm a recovering Fantastica player. I was spending at least $20-50/week on that game.

They killed the game and now almost no one plays it.

1) I know, which is really sad... all the japanese mobile games i have downloaded are filled with that gacha crap.

2) The Grablue PS4 game isnt the mobile game, its a proper Action JRPG (so thats pretty great) there is even an anime airing right now, i mean i do hate the Gacha for the gambling aspect but... at least thanks to it my favorite Anime (which is Fate) is getting a LOAD of money which means more anime adaptations (this year we have 3 for it) and actual proper games for console (this year we also had one called Fate Extella for the PS4 which sadly is a muso game but hey... its all about that lore, characters and story so i will eventually buy it for that)

At least the FF one (Record Keeper) is very generous with the daily, event and playing rewards, so even as it was based on that mechanic I have a lot of the best stuff on my account there without spending a penny, so it can actually be done right tho XP

Ive been lucky too, i got almost all the characters i wanted and most of them are the most OP units in the game, but... still that 40 dollar price tag for a shot at the gacha is ridiculously high, i aint gonna pay the same amount of money i did for Nier Automata for that.

I dont know about Record Keeper since i have never played it, how much is the cost of a roll there? and what are the percentages of getting what you want? because its that gacha thing what really disturbs me and disgusts me, (even if you can have fun with the F2P way).

Much better game than something like 1,2 Switch, bomberman, shovel knight, blaster master ect.

Hopefully Nintendo guys continue to support it.

I know I shouldn't do this, but here we go anyway. Which one of them have you played?

None of them... played Disgaea though.

But really..... would you argue 1,2-switch or bomberman is a better game than Disgaea 5?

Common 1,2-switch is "barely" a game imo.

Whats with Japanese culture in France?? Like is there a reason why they seem to have taken to it more than most western countries??

Also totally picking this up day 1, I have an unopened copy of the limited edition for PS4 but now that its on a portable I will have the time to finally play it.

Manga and especially Anime became really huge in France during the 80's, and even before there where some highly sucessful Anime shows in France (like Captain Future, called Capitaine Flam in France) and Franco-Japanese coproductions (Ulysse 31, Les sept cités d'or, Jayce et les conquérants de la lumière; calles Ulysses 31, Seven cities of gold and Jayce and the wheeled warriors respectively in english-speaking countries).

It really took off in the mid 80's, when Anime shows got imported by the truckloads: Saint Seiya (Les chevaliers du Zodiaque), City Hunter (Nikki Larson), Hokuto no Ken (Ken le survivant), Dragonball, Ufo Robo Grendizer (Goldorak), Cat's Eyes, Captain Tsubabsa (Olive et Tom), Sailor Moon... and that's just a fraction of them all! Did I mention that all of them ran during the morning? Yes, even Hokuto no Ken or Saint Seiya, as the belief back then was that all animation was for kids, but that quickly changed during the nineties. They also ran just shortly after their original screening in japan (Saint Seiya for instance had all in all a three weeks delay to the japanese original showings!). In fact, saint Seiya was so popular in France that not only they gave it the internationally known title (Chevaliers du Zodiaque means Knights of the Zodiac), but the NES Saint Seiya game got ONLY exported to France, with a full translation no less.

One show in France basically ruled them all, that was the Club Dorothée. It started out comparatively small with 2 hours a week (one hour each on sundays and wednesdays) but grew into a 50 hour+ Juggernaught at it's peak which garnered around 80% viewership (Ufo Robo Grendizer even managed to flat out reach the fabled 100% once, meaning every single TV in france was running the show!). The Dubs and anime intros, since they had to be changed to aim at kids, are nowadays full of narm Charm but you can bet your ass that frenchmen who where kids back then will still know a lot of the intro songs by heart. So no wonder Anime, manga and japanese culture caught on very well there

TL;DR: Anime and manga got popularised much earlier and to a massively larger degree compared to the US for instance.

Do they also read manga?

I mean, comic books are very popular in Belgium too, but I rarely see manga in stores.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga_outside_Japan#France

That's ironic considering I tend to go to Cora Messancy to buy mangas

Though we also have (just like some parts in France) a shop dedicated to mangas in Luxembourg, but it's more expensive. Heck, France has even a TV Chain dedicated to anime and mangas: http://www.mangas.fr/

I presume those are pre orders from retailers and not consumers? Anybody know?

Probably because when we were kids in 90ish, most Tv channels got Anime in the morning (and the rest of the day).

Club dorothée (Tf1), DKTV (france 2), Les Minikeums (France 3) and probably one on M6 too. Befoire going to school, we ALWAYS watched the last episode of Dbz or even Sailor moon.

If you stayed at home, you could see Albator, Nicky larson, princess Sarah, etc, etc...

Then of course we got manga here early than in others country, and it become popular really fast.

Nice! I have it preordered on the Switch, so I guess I'm one of those. Hope it lives up the (admittedly limited) hype.
