Again 33 years more entries than probably DQ and Final Fantasy combined and I am counting spinoffs of DQ and FF as well,no joke. Still releasing entries in the west. Xseed just announced Trails of Cold Steel 3. First 2 were on Vita and did well in the west and Japan. Series has sold millions upon millions. It's easily one of Japans most popular RPG series. It's larger than Final Fantasy in Japan. So again your lack of knowledge means nothing. Without the popularity of Falcoms games making RPGs immensely popular there,we have no Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. Falcom made RPGs popular there.

To cut this pointless discussion short:

Selection Criteria

The World Video Game Hall of Fame recognizes individual electronic games of all types—arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile—that meet the following criteria:

  • Icon-status: the game is widely recognized and remembered.
  • Longevity: the game is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time.
  • Geographical reach: the game meets the above criteria across international boundaries.
  • Influence: The game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general. A game may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.

Neither of the games you mentioned are widely recognized or have geographical reach. They might have had longevity and influence on the industry but they fall very short on the fame factor. What distinguishes all of the games in the HOF are that they fulfil all of the criteria.

It does meet htat criteria but this Video Game Hall of Fame is as much bullshit as the WWE HOF. Instead of putting games or franchises that actually deserve it...it's a popularity contest of what is most recent in mainstream gamers minds in the west. The first Sonic doesn't deserve it. Game sucks balls,it's actually pretty bad. Sonic 2 on the other hand, one of the very few games ever made that is as close to perfect as Super Metroid.

The gaming industry does not solely contains videogame archeologists and experts, it also comprises the fans. Popularity among fans is one thing  that shapes the industry, as in if something is popular more of it will be made. So yes, in some way it is a popularity contest, but all games included have also massively impacted the industry with gameplay alone.

I agree that Sonic does not belong in this list, none of the Sonic games do. The rest is fine.

If it was solely about popularity you would find things like GTAV, Minecraft or Skyrim in there but you don't because that's not all there is to it. It's about having a massive impact on the future of video games.

Games that have only been very popular in a single country or in a very fringe genre with small but dedicated fanbases do not belong in this list. No matter how good they are or how many spinoffs they have. Weren't you the guy who didn't even know about Touhou? The most popular bullet hell shooter in the world. Also does not belong in this list.

How come GTA3 and Street Fighter 2 got in there while their predecessors didn't, while Halo got in despite it's successors being vastly superior in every way?

The original Street Fighter was reviewed as mediocre and was an afterthought until II came out and took the arcades by storm. GTA3 apparently brought the sandbox genre to a whole new level back in the day. Then Halo Combat Evolved was revolutionary for its time in the first person shooter genre with its online multiplayer and compelling campaign. At least, that's how all of them are remembered by.

Halo changed how shooters are made, from being Doom-like with lots of weapons at once and healthpacks to a limited weapon loadout and regenerating armor. As such, Halo is more influencial than Halo 2, even though the sucessor is the better game.

Maybe they're not sure which one to choose for the HOF.

Well theyre both equally important. DQ made the genre more accessible than RPGs before it and did things that were important in the development of future RPGs such as giving depth to characters on your team, the way battle HUDs look, etc. While FF popularized the genre and added a party system, etc.

That all existed before with Wizardry and Ultima. In fact, JRPGs where invented basically by mixing those 2 game series together, and the creators of both DQ and FF credit those games as being their inspiration for their games.

Reasons why Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy have yet to be added baffles me

Ys and Dragon Slayer deserve it more seeing how Falcom created the very first Japanese role playing games ever. They were ARPGs but still the first. Both series are still around and still popular.

Didn't Black Onyx come out even before?

In any case, the creators of all those games mentioned how much they got influenced by 2 western game series, Wizardry and Ultima, and it shows as they are all a bit of mix and match of both games. So clearly these 2 game series needs to get into the Hall of fame (and, by extention Akalabeth: World of Doom, as it was Richard Garriot's prototype for the later Ultima series) as mixing those games together made the entire genre of JRPGs

No, it's not about who came first. It's about who popularized and shaped it for the future. That's FF and to a lesser extent DQ. It's a Hall of Fame.  Not a Hall of Who Came First.

You can see that in how certain games were chosen within their own series. It's not GTA 1 or 2, it's GTA3 because it shaped open world games to come despite being entirely based on its predecessors and most likely other games. It's Street Fighter 2 and not Street Fighter because the original wasn't refined enough to have an impact.

Oh, there are too many of them to mention. But personally I want HoMM2 and MM6 to be in the list. Yeah, I know it's UNREAL, but I think that these series is soo damn underrated and deserve much more attention and recognition, that's unfair.

That I know, the Black Onyx was just a question to Segata which of these games came out first, but I know none of these where nearly as influential as DQ or FF was.

My point about Wizardry and Ultima still stands though, since they shaped both eastern and western RPG design and where very long living series (Ultima online can still be played, Wizardry still has some games coming out in Japan and Wizardry Online)

But they still fall short as being widely recognized. They're definitely pioneers but that alone just doesn't qualify. They live on in FF which is a widely known series beloved around the world. Even most people who played FF don't even know what Wizardry or Ultima is. And that is where they failed and FF succeeded. Refining gameplay and wrapping it in an appealing  package. That's where those games failed and why they are the inferior contestants for inclusion.

That's why the inventor of the Laser is not included in the Hall Of Fame of computer mice.

Outside of the RTS games you put there, which should actually be Warcraft(for doing things right) and Starcraft(for being the best in the genre), I agree mostly with the recomendations.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=241866&page=1

Honestly I think they've done a really good job so far. Sonic is debatable but the rest strike me as first-ballot hall of famers.

I'd also nominate Ultima, Final Fantasy, Quake, and Super Mario 64.

Games should be at least 15-20 years old to enter lists like these. Many games we often think are great are contemporary and don't stand the test of time.

Because GTA3, SF2 and Halo both were revolutionary for their genres, their sequels just improved on the formula.
