Forums - Sales - Global Hardware March 11th week 2017

So, PS4 down over 20% yoy, how is no one talking about that and focusing on it beating a supply constrained Switch in its second week? Last year that week had The Division, this year that week had Ghost Recon and the large tail of Horizon, so it's not about lack of big software either.

Anyone still thinking 2016 wasn't the PS4's peak year like I said in 2015?

2016 wasn't the PS4s peak year. It sold better in 2015. And I think nobody is talking about it because it's only one week, and otherwise the PS4 has been pretty neck and neck with it's sales last year.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I still do

Because the PS4 peaked in 2015 already - though 2016 was basically flat

2016 wasn't the PS4s peak year. It sold better in 2015. And I think nobody is talking about it because it's only one week, and otherwise the PS4 has been pretty neck and neck with it's sales last year.

It outsold 2016 for January, by about 135k at that, and then through February and the first half of March, that lead was eaten and discarded and 2016 is now about 15-20k ahead of 2017, and 2016 outsold 2017 every week since the end of January save for one, where 2017 was up about 4k on last year. So a better post-holiday followed by a lower baseline, that's something worth talking about. And there were arguably bigger releases this year than in Q1 2016, so that's not really a good argument to use either (for those who will).

The PS4 Pro and Slim was hailed as the main thing that would help the PS4 be up yoy for 2017, I always said it wouldn't. Now, it's too early to tell for the entire year of course, but the 2017 crowd still has what seems like an uphill battle for their wish to come true. These are mostly the same who shouted about selling PS2 numbers, having a decade long cycle and selling more than 20 million in 2016 as well.

Even with price drops and some good software, I just don't think it will be up. If a great Q1 line-up, Pro and Slim didn't do the trick, that tells us something.

PS: As always, we need to add the possibility that our numbers aren't very good... But that leaves us with the fact that the PS4 has been overtracked a great deal here before, so the 2016 vs 2017 might be even worse if mistakes have been made. 2016 initial Q1 tracking of the PS4 was about 40-50% off after all, it was the worst hardware tracking I've ever seen in here for almost a decade.

After adjustments, PS4 first again, but NS and Zelda are in short supply and stores sell them as soon as they put them on the shelves. We'll see at what level sales will settle in the next months.

Is this true? Which country are you talking about here?

Yes this is true for many countries, the sooner you accept it the better.

Shortages are reported at least in USA and UK, Ninty still has to see where sales can settle before deciding by how much increase production, if necessary (I wouldn't believe rumours about promises to double it, now, but we'll see in the next months, and it could even be true if they prudently kept their initial expectations very low). Obviously there are also countries where there aren't shortages. And USA are big, so there may be places where supplies were sufficient.

Not absolutely 0 stock but some countries like Singapore tried to push for bundles similar with Gamestop US deals.  Nintendo Switch console + 1-2 switch + Zelda BOTW as a bundle.  So there is a limited supply of consoles across ASEAN countries.   Australia it will always have a stock due to pricing.

UK demand is getting better compared to US, as I just got one from Amazon UK before it got out of stock and restock would happen by May 5-10 in line for Mario Kart 8 deluxe.

Well, I don't believe you because facts say otherwise. An obvious example is Australia where it never sold out and http://www.istocknow.com/product/switch shows plenty of Switches available.
