Forums - Sales - March 2017 NPD Thread! Software charts up!

Did NPD mention that Zelda BOTW (both versions) was the top selling game of the month? I'm sure they would have outlined that in the accolades they mentioned for Zelda.

Software rankings won't be out until next Thursday.

We'll get charts on monday, I believe. But as you said, if Nintendo didn't mention yesterday, it probably didn't top the charts.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

And i'm sure the numbers for Switch will keep up with the steady line of releases, so long as stock is up and they keep up the kind of marketing they're doing right now. My biggest worry is that while this year they've got big-hitters, i do hope that they'll have some more for next year too, though i'm sure E3 will alleviate those worries

Switch did better in March than Wii U in Nov+Dec

Sure, but the Wii U was beasting in January 2013, so the upcoming comparisons are going to be an uphill battle for a Switch that is barely ahead at this point.

I'm actually worried. Switch is sold out all over the place, while the Wii U was everywhere, even at pottery barn.

I was being sarcastic. In January 2013 scalpers were returning the Wii Us that they couldn't sell on ebay and the like, and NPD deducted those returns to retail stores from the sales in January, so the Wii U was left with a figure of well below 100k.

Switch will trounce Wii U without breaking a sweat. It beat the Wii U's holiday launch (November+December 2012, roughly seven weeks of tracking) in a non-holiday month (March 2017, roughly five weeks of tracking) and it's selling through its supply for April with ease while Wii U was dead in the water. Switch is probably going to pass Wii U's total sales for the first twelve NPD months within only six months, so without a holiday sales boost.

So, NPD deducts sales to retail stores? Do they add them back when they're sold again?

Damn, if that chart shows anything it's that launch sales don't mean anything, especially for Nintendo consoles.  The GC started stronger than the Wii, yet sold ~35M less than it.  The GBA was the strongest launch, pretty close to the Switch, yet sold ~10M less than the Wii and ~25M less than the DS.  The 3DS had the weakest launch, yet has done ~15M more than the Wii U, so far.

Also shows that people are more informed and like to go buy things Day 1. Manufacturers have largely adapated for this compared to previous generations.

Oh, I know. I was being sarcastic, too. :P

Makes sence, more people have a Wii U in 2017 compared to 2014.

That's a good point actually. Looking at VGC numbers the Wii U sold 760K in the US in it's first 28 days. That puts the Switch at about 142K or about 19% better. It will be interesting to see how the Switch performs in the next few months.

Although a Holiday vs March launch also skews things. First year sales will be a better comparison.

Is there evience to support the speculation that the holidays positively affect console launch sales? I'm not saying they don't, I just haven't seen any actual evidence that says it does. Also, I think you could find evidece to support the idea that modern launches represent a larger portion of a consoles first year sales compared to older launches. So that may skew the numbers in Switches favor.

Like I said, I haven't seen actual evidence to support either just yet. But I'll do some digging either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.
