Forums - Sony - Persona 5 has shipped 1.5 million as of April 4th

So people are only now discovering the gem that persona is???
I m very surprise based on the sale of the previous game. But this series is freaking amazing.
I got introduce to it with persona 4 golden (one of the best jrpg I have played). Purchase some on psn when they are on sale but I just don't have the time to play.

I was already interested, but my friend who is a JRPG junky is comparing it to Suikoden II and Final Fantasy VI, the highest praise I can imagine from him.

How is Persona a niche game? If that is a niche game, would something like Shin Megamo tensei be too?

More niche people coming out of the closet?

This is my first Persona game, after my only JRPG-playing friend irl convinced me how 'amazing' it was. All I can say now is 'wow!'. I'm only 7 hours in and I can already tell that this is something special. Hope that it keeps these sales up and maybe, just maybe, it can hit 3 million. It'll be hard though :(

shame it still doesn't count as a real game because it's so niche

So what to do consider real games?  Halo, Gears, Forza, and Fighters Uncaged?

He's not being serious. Some users have argued the PS4's recent surge of Japanese releases don't count because they're "niche games no one buys", so he's mirroring it in a thread about one such title doing well.

So my copy is supposed to arrive at 1:00 this afternoon and I'm pretty excited/nervous! I've never played a JRPG before and I have no idea what to expect but when a game scores a 94 on Metacritic, how can you not give it a chance!?

What on earth is Fighter's Uncaged?

It doesn't work like that. Niche isn't related to sales that way. Niche games usually don't sale a lot because they are niche games, they're not niche games because they don't sell much. Niche is about genre, themes and target audience. Persona is an anime high-school class and dating sim/visual novel/turn-based JRPG, it's the definition of a niche game that will appeal to a very specific or informed audience, while the broad audience will say "what is this?" or "what's the point?". Persona 5 could sell 5M and still be a niche game. The most successful niche game ever, maybe, but niche game nonetheless. Meanwhile, PES could sell 100k and would still be a football game, basically the opposite of a niche game. Unsuccessful or flop doesn't mean niche.

This right here is spot on for what I consider niche as well.

Niche isn't a permanent status either.  Hell, 15 years ago comic books were a niche market.  Now thanks to the prevalence of the movies, it has become a more mainstream thing while the sales of the books haven't exactly taken them out of the "niche" mindset for a lot of people.

Let me guess.  The "Fighters Uncaged" ruffled some feathers.
