I never really used the tablet mode on WiiU.  I just hate that type of controller and from what I've heard joycons are not even that good.  Too bad their pro controller went to asymetrical sticks but I'd still rather use that and play on a big screen.

There is no rule stating that you have to use the Joycons when you undock it lol.

don't you have to use them on the controller or separated?  I mean I'm not carrying around a separate controller to use with a tablet screen

I guess it would cost Nintendo their existence

I have to imagine they could have sold a Switch dedicated handheld and dedicated home console for $199 a piece.

Which actually, probably wouldn't have been a bad idea. If someone just wants one, they can get one for a really good price, but they both still play all the same games. It would be way better for families where you have more than one gamer too.

Actually, why didn't they do this?

Oh right, because apparently we aren't allowed to think Nintendo could survive off of anything but "different" hardware...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

dont be so sure it wont still happen. Many consoles/handhelds have gotten multiple revisions throughout their lives and I dont see Switch being any different.

5" screen, portable only with built in controls-$199

Microconsole, TV only with Pro Controller-$199

More powerful version with a 1080p screen-$299

When Nintendo first started talking about supporting a single unified platform, they said that its possible that we will see the number of form factors increase.

Calling portability a "gimmick", now we really have hit a new low

As long as the gimmick doesn't involve a screen, probably doesn't make much of a difference.

If Nintendo created a Switch without a battery, dockable screen, Joycons, game cards, or HD rumble how much would it cost to produce? In other words, imagine if the Switch was just a regular console that took regular game disks, came with a pro controller, and an HDMI cable. How much are Nintendo's gimmicks costing us?

How much would a tablet-less Wii U, with a pro-controller instead, cost?

How about a 3DS XL, without the 3D effect?

The Switch isn't a gimmick. Its a portable console that also connects to the TV. Is a laptop a gimmick to you?

If it has any gimmick, its the motion controller because that's niche thing for a games.

"How much would Nintendo hardware cost to produce without gimmicks?" We will never know.

The price would drop about a hundred dollars I think because that's about how much I remember a Wii U gamepad was rumored to cost.
