Forums - Nintendo - Aonuma implies open world Zelda may be standard from now on

Excellent 64 50.39%

Amazing as BotW 30 23.62%

Zelda cycle as I miss the old formula 33 25.98%

It will be interesting to see where they go from here. I have a feeling the weapons degradation system will be massively streamlined given the complaints, and if it means the return of the option for sword motion controls I'd welcome that change. Perhaps a larger focus on the story in the next game.

Having 4 dungeons which are closer to the dungeons in TP or SS would be great. Something like the Snowpeak temple, which was a giant mansion, would be great in an open world Zelda.

I'd like to see the full context of the interview, but it makes sense to me. The game is one of the most highly reviewed games ever made; I would be absolutely baffled if they decided to drop this formula.

Still, hoping they can find a way to balance both styles. I like the music themes and massive dungeons as well as the open world freedom, and one doesn't necessarily rule out the other.

Wonder what this means for top down Zelda on Switch since they are technically open world.

As far as I remember, the next one could be a 2D Zelda before a 3D sequel.

Could be. Nintendo might be working on a top down Zelda to make Switch more appealing for their handheld audience and give us more Zelda before their next 3D title.

Question. For those asking for more dungeons (I want too), what kind of dungeons do you want?

I think in order to retain the open world freedom and non-linearity of BotW, dungeons would have to be closer in style to Hyrule Castle than Vah Naboris, for example. I think themed dungeons and dungeons that grant powerful, potentially game-breaking items are out. Instead they'd have to be ruins or castles or catacombs with tough enemies and lots of treasure and maybe weapons/shields/bows to collect.

In short, you wouldn't have [insert themed temple] where Link gets [insert artifact that beats dungeon boss]. You'd have a lot of optional monster-infested dungeons with rewards in the form of rare weaponry and valuables.

I'm down for trying another Zelda game in this style. I'd be eager to see how they can expand on this for another Zelda title. Perhaps have more traditional items from the older games, or come up with new rune mechanics. Maybe even expand on story elements or whatever else they think of.

If they can find a way to make it work with the new open-world formula, I want them to go back to the "lock-and-key" dungeons with specific items. Ideally I'd have at least 8 of those, but I'd be fine with 5-6 dungeons as long as they were huge. Aesthetics-wise they can do whatever, go crazy with it, I just don't want them all to look the same.

I've only played 2 of the 4 dungoens, but they have felt quite short compared to older dungeons, with the Zora one being painfully short. So perhaps longer dungeons for me?

Like it should have being since Ocarina of time which was already open world-ish

Always thought the games after this one were lazy and unambitious games technically

It's bittersweet to me. I absolutely adore BotW and I definitely want other titles like this. I wish they could find a happy medium with it, as I still love the traditional Zelda of finding new awesome items to use all game.
Perhaps they'll find a happy medium for this, and honestly I would prefer it being more like 80/20 open world/traditional, but I would like to see a way for them to do some of the old stuff as well. Might be hard to find uses for hookeshots/clawshots if Link can climb anything :(

You can't climb in shrines and divine beasts and shrines also block out your special abilities. Adding longer more traditional underground dungeons with specific gadgets would fit fine and hopefully the DLC will do something like that. They could even be challenges that limit in certain ways like Eventide island.

There are linear elements in Botw already. You can't get into the Yiga hideout without getting the quest first for example, or get the master sword straight away. They could have used the master sword as a key yet chose not to.

A happy medium could work. Underwater boots, control of the wind, heavy lifting gloves, time rewind powers, can all be required for certain dungeons and won't break the overworld. Going into the past and future can be awesome too. Make it so you can visit the Windwaker period and only the mountain peaks are sticking out of the water level. Same map, with the boots you can even dive down to hyrule castle :)

True! Hopefully they can expand on the dungeons/shrines/whatever they come up with next. I think that would really satisfy everything for me as they did an amazing job with the open world. Would love to see a way to combine both!

Considering how well received BotW was it's not surprising.
