Forums - Nintendo - Aonuma implies open world Zelda may be standard from now on

These news are...

Excellent 64 50.39%

Amazing as BotW 30 23.62%

Zelda cycle as I miss the old formula 33 25.98%

Total:127

Thats good news, evne though I do hope they make the oddball here and there like a topdown Zelda like A Lnik Betwenn Worlds.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

what an amazing game - what an amazing idea - I hope to see dlc for this game till Holiday 2018.

and another new game in 2021.

SS HD Holiday 2019

Switch!!!

I'm conflicted. On one hand, Zelda is my favorite series because the formula is so perfect. On the other hand, Aonuma made arguably the best Zelda game yet by straying from that formula.

Of course, its one of the top games of ALL TIME.

I'd love to have some of the more formulaic elements return. I miss classic dungeons.
While I love how intertwined with the storytelling the divine beasts are, I wish we could find a happy medium between that and actual themed dungeons. I do feel the dungeons could be much more integrated with the story and also provide more visual storytelling but I love the concept of having them in the world to discover and solve.
And while I like the shines and having them all in the same look as the divine beasts makes sense for BoTW I'd hate to see that kind of design become the standart of the series. Variation is one of the things I loved most about the Zelda franchise along with it's colorful kooky characters.

Wonder what this means for top down Zelda on Switch since they are technically open world.

As far as I remember, the next one could be a 2D Zelda before a 3D sequel.

they should mix it and find a middle ground. keep the open world but add more dungeons, make dungeons around items found in them, needed only for that dungeon but give some nice bonus for the open world. e.g. instead of the falcon ability (don't remember the name) give us a hookshot which can make many puzzles easier but not mandatory to complete.

Great. I don't think I could ever go back.

Question. For those asking for more dungeons (I want too), what kind of dungeons do you want?

It's bittersweet to me. I absolutely adore BotW and I definitely want other titles like this. I wish they could find a happy medium with it, as I still love the traditional Zelda of finding new awesome items to use all game.
Perhaps they'll find a happy medium for this, and honestly I would prefer it being more like 80/20 open world/traditional, but I would like to see a way for them to do some of the old stuff as well. Might be hard to find uses for hookeshots/clawshots if Link can climb anything :(

You can't climb in shrines and divine beasts and shrines also block out your special abilities. Adding longer more traditional underground dungeons with specific gadgets would fit fine and hopefully the DLC will do something like that. They could even be challenges that limit in certain ways like Eventide island.

There are linear elements in Botw already. You can't get into the Yiga hideout without getting the quest first for example, or get the master sword straight away. They could have used the master sword as a key yet chose not to.

A happy medium could work. Underwater boots, control of the wind, heavy lifting gloves, time rewind powers, can all be required for certain dungeons and won't break the overworld. Going into the past and future can be awesome too. Make it so you can visit the Windwaker period and only the mountain peaks are sticking out of the water level. Same map, with the boots you can even dive down to hyrule castle :)
