Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The power gap between Scorpio and PS4 Pro might be greater than the Switch and the PS4 Slim.

Sonys response: *yawn*

Power doesn't matter anymore. We're back to games > specs :P

Is scorpio microsoft's version of the ps 4 pro? i.e., a more powerful version of the xbox one? Or is it microsoft's next iteration of the xbox? I'm a little confused as to what it is.

It's just like a supercharged Playstation 4 Pro. All the Xbox One accessories and games will be compatible with the console.

the power difference at 4 tf to 6 tf has very diminishing returns unlike the jump from ps4 to pro or xbox to scorpio..

If all the rest of the hardware remains the same. Sure. But guess what? There is more to performance than flops.

The Power will be used effeciently because they develop games for XBox One and PC and will use the PC version and use the settings to scale with the Scorpio, 4k textures etc will automatically be available since they are created for the PC anyway.

It won't use PC's max settings in allot of demanding AAA titles.
If a high-end PC can't do AAA games at 4k with all Ultra settings, no way in hell will a more price-sensitive device like a console achieve it.

6Tflops will be used better because the console won't run into bottlebecks, like Dark Souls III not being able to hit 60fps on PS4 pro isn't because of the speed of the GPU, a 470RX can easely hit 60fps, its most likely a memory or CPU bottleneck, many people making comparison video's like VGTech or Digital foundry have found multiple instances of memory or cpu bottlenecks on the Pro.

So the 6Tflops will be used much more favourable because of the extra memory speed, bigger memory bus and more available memory and if the rumours are true and the console uses a Ryzen architecture APU then you can take the "Tflops" fight with a grain of salt, the Scorpio will blow anything we've seen in the console space away

That depends. Just because you have an underpowered CPU doesn't mean you will always be held back by the CPU.
GPU's these days are capable of offloading a significant amount of computation that is normally reserved for the CPU... Which does help make up for any CPU deficits.
Plus games aren't a static environment, the processing load can and will change depending on what is being displayed on the screen, developers will account for that.

Converesly... We literally have zero idea what CPU Scorpio will use.
Plus using flops within the context you are using it in is incorrect anyway... It's a theoretical number. It may not even be achievable in the real world and having Bandwidth/Memory bottlenecks doesn't change the single precision floating point capabilities anyway.

I'm pretty sure the Scorpio can't run BOTW or Horizon: Zero Dawn at 4k and 60fps

The Xbox One has had a few emulators on it. What is to say that in the future CEMU is ported to the Xbox One and Zelda is emulated on the console?

And about the ryzen rumors pray that those are not true, I dont believe ryzen will be the cpu coz MS is not dumb enough to make a deal on a cpu which was not released, without knowing the real world performance and fab yield issues, even in Hypothetical Scenario for marketing terms MS does decide to go with low end Ryzen along with VEGA GPU u can certainly kiss even a $450 price tag good bye, which will be a sucide.

The thing about Ryzen is that it had engineering samples over a year ago, so AMD and Microsoft would have had a pretty good idea on it's performance, capabilities and fabrication costs/yields.

I do agree it is way to expensive to consider though.

Power always matters. To a point.
Scorpio being technically superior is going to ruffle some feathers around these 'ere parts.

Power does matter, but whats power without great responsibility :D

A games company needs to do three things, its not complicated, but seems companies get it wrong:

Power | Price | Exclusive & Wide genre of games.

So when XBO came out, it was marketted poorly to a USA centric market with very non gamer specific stuff and some restricted things. It was more expensive and had an extra peice of harware (Kinect) that was not supported with anything substatial (so wheres the player benefit). So of course cheaper, better supported more powerful PS4 won. But dont be confused by the fact the PS4 won just because it was more powerful, it didnt, it was all the other things that had an impact. MS at the moment seems to think just making their hardware more powerful will win the day, it wont.

How does Sony respond?

By selling tens of millions more PS4s.

PS5 is not coming till late 2019 at best or 2020ish.

I don't think Sony needs to respond. Games win you sales, Sony hasn't even released the big guns yet.

Out of interest what are Sonys big guns that haven't released yet?

New Last of US, God of War, Gran turismo, Final Fantasy 7 Remake..... probably also Spiderman/deaths stranding/Detroit Become human will be big.

Some delusional thread right here folks.

That seems almost like MS is making a start on the 9th generation, not a gen 8.5 machine. Would be pretty close to form with MS putting a fork in Xb og after just 4 years of sales much weaker than PS2.

What is behind scorpio ?
Universal Windows Plateform (uwp), projet Hélix, play anywhere... Microsoft want a plateform for developers, xbox one is low PC for 1080p and xbox scorpio is gaming PC for 4k...
Microsoft want to kill steam (win32 remplace by UWP) with Windows store, and in the same time, xbox family using UWP for easy porting.

The problème of Sony, it's not the scorpio.... It's Windows / UWP !

Speaking about tflops is not important, anyway we pay power (ps4p, scorpio or PC) or portability (switch) ... the important is how have the Best games on their plateforms (software) for a family of products. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo want a family of products, with différents prices, but one Way to développing.
