Forums - Nintendo - Now that Zelda has gone Open World, will it ever go back?

Is the Breath of the Wild formula, 1 and done?

I guess I'm confused.

It's interesting what people call "open world". Apparently, it means "giant map I can't immediately figure out". Honestly, it feels like a regular Zelda game, in a lot of respects, to me. The map is just bigger. And I guess...That means a lot to some people?

2D Zelda?

If they do, I hope they don't follow mainline Final Fantasy release schedule then D:

Plus, there was also wanting a huge launch title for the Switch among other things.

LOL XD Thanks for the laugh! I needed it!

I don't think it'll be one and done, but I don't think the next Zelda will be like Breath of the Wild.

Oh, I'm sure they'll continue with 2D Zelda. Perhaps as an appetizer in between 3D games to keep fans satisfied. (Like A Link Between Worlds was meant to do between Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword) plus whatever more spinoffs that may come.

"open world" on breath of the wild means that you can do anything at any order, other zelda game have a maps with different places but the structure of the gameplay and story is linear.

Zelda has always been openworld. OoC was one of the first games to push the openworld genre. I think your referring to Sandbox. Would it continue being a Sandbox game? I would say so since BOTW utilised it so well. Than again its Nintendo, they always like to try new things.

Yes theres the large map , another key component seems to be the go anywhere do it how you want scenario , so you have a main quest but you can complete it at your leisure ,and the world has many side quests and exploritory options, they beside filling the world with purpose act to train and build up your character with skills armor etc.

Zelda is made for this type of game , what I would like to see is a bit more structure return in the way of traditional dungeons with out diminishing the expanded exploration and not havemost of the  tools available so early on, now I understand why they did that in botw since they wanted to show off the exploration and had introduced the shrines to facilitate that end , but with a future game they no longer have to push that side of the game play so hard so the balance between structure and freedom can be tweeked.
