Save points in RPGs. God do I hate save points in RPGs.

English-only voice options in Japanese games.

Escort missions

Points of no return / Missable items and quests. Makes me feel like I need to scour the entire world before I can advance the story.

Games that feature life-sim options that mean fuck-all in the actual game story. It's annoying seeing the MC start dating or get married to someone, only for them to act like nothing changed next time the characters interact outside of sim scenes. It's awkward and immersion-breaking.

Probably others I'm forgetting, but these are the ones that bug me the most.

I hate missable items. Or missable events, things to see. Tales games are huge offenders of this. Like after everything you do, you almost have to go scour the entire world again because some random quest or npc comment may pop up and if you don't you might miss out on getting a title.

Exclusive content for different game retailers resulting in different versions of the game.

Yep, so hate exclusive retail stuff. I don't like it when I can't get everything in a game.

Heck i'm not getting Injustice 2 until the goty edition comes out when it has all the pre-order/retail/ect stuff along with dlc included.  Retail exclusive stuff at times prevents me from even purchasing a game.

On the technical side of things...

1) screen tearing
2 frame rate slowdown (don't mind a few dips - would have to be a slideshow to bother me)
3) long loading times

On the gameplay side of things...

1) QTEs
2) interactive cinematics
3) lack of offline/local play

On the Legend of Dragoon side of things...

1) Legend of Dragoon

I hate QTE's. Nothing more annoying than watching some cutscene and then bam they are like "oh, push A quick" Dude my controller isn't even in my hands.

But boss fights too I hate them. I spent how many hours toning my skills in combat to fight this boss and yet it all comes down to a cheesy pushign buttons to do some combat that I could never do in the game.

I hope you have said your goodbyes already, 'cause this is permaban worthy.

You said it. Uncharted is especially guilty of pulling those shenanigans in boss fights. Shadow of Mordor, too. Great game, lame end boss fight.

Loading Times are something since the PS1 I have loathed and despite all the advancements I still run into them in games. I really love games front loading a big load screen and the fact that can put PS4 in rest mode to hope back into a game like Horizon within a minute of sitting down.

Loading times helped push me away from the PS1 and towards the N64. They just started to wear on me. The loading times in Just Cause 3, when having to re-do challenges, were terrible, since they were somthing that had to be repeated often. Basically killed the game for me.

- "If you have the heart of a true winner, you can always get more pissed off than some other asshole."

Only first person mode
Not enough colours
Not being obliged to press a button to continue a dialogue (in some kinds of games)
Annoying manual camera.

@Flilix, Man, you said a mouthful. My daughter beat Gravity Rush 2 last weekend but not me. Why? The goddam camera is atrocious! The first game didn't have that problem.

Games with 2D sprite-based graphics being remade with terrible fifth-gen "quality" 3D polygon-based graphics (looking at you, Square-Enix).

Related to the above, the fact that 2D sprite-based graphics have been ignored by nearly everyone except indie devs over most of the past 21-22 years. Even games with 2D gameplay rarely have sprite-based graphics and instead opt for 3D graphics. Sure, many genres work better with 3D graphics, but some would still work with that old pixel art look and 2D gameplay. I think Arc System Works are the last devs that could qualify as "AAA" that still support sprite-based graphics in their games.

To continue on the topic of 2D vs 3D, something that bugged the hell out of me back in the latter half of the 90s was how nearly the entire industry abandoned not just sprites, but 2D gameplay in general, even though many series and genres worked better in 2D and looked better with sprite-based graphics. The industry just jumped headlong into 3D, and for years most games struggled with piss-poor controls, bad cameras, and visuals that, unless they were going for something cartoony, looked bad even back then and has aged even worse. 2D has had a modest resurgence, though it's still mostly an indie thing, and the industry has since moved past the growing pains of the early days of the shift to 3D.

Moving along...

Turn-based RPGs falling by the wayside and everything going action-based hack & slash (still looking at you, Squeenix). Apparently good enough for classics like FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Lunar, etc., but considered "uncool" for any modern game.

Cheap difficulty. I don't mind a challenge, but I do mind it when games test my patience instead of my skill.

Skinner box "investment systems" and other game mechanics that encourage grinding.

Poor draw distance and noticeable texture & object popping. Still an issue today.

Excessive and glaring jaggies/aliasing. How is this still a thing?

Screen tearing. Argh!

Inconsistent frame rate. I don't mind 30fps. I'm not one of those "60fps Master Race" guys. But I do mind excessive and obtrusive frame rate dips as well as dropped frames. Keeping a game at a steady 30fps should be a trivial task these days. Consistent performance is important.

Microtransactions in full-priced games. Leave that shit in free-to-play games, 'kay?

"On-disc DLC." For one, it's an oxymoron. The content is on-disc, not digital content downloaded from the internet. It's a fucking paywall blocking access to material that's on a disc you paid good money for.

Konami, full stop. They used to be one of the best, but now they're a joke, literally and figuratively.

Nintendo neglecting classic franchises. Gimme F-Zero!

Nintendo forcing controller gimmicks into gameplay when conventional controls would be better (see waggle on the Wii Zelda games and forced gyro/gamepad controls for Star Fox Zero). Should be less of an issue with the Switch since, despite its hybrid nature being unconventional, it's really focusing on conventional controls.

The push towards digital on consoles, and the fact that many console gamers are willing to fall into that trap. Seriously. It's a raw deal. We're just asking to get screwed over. You really trust the industry enough to hand over complete control of everything to the platform holders and publishers? You do know consoles and PCs are not the same, right? Don't be an enabler.

Online-only, especially when it's being forced into a game that could in principle function perfectly fine offline. Your internet goes out? Can't play. The platform's online service goes offline for whatever reason? Can't play. The game's servers go down? Can't play. The game is simply shut down for good? Enjoy your $60 coaster (or $60 worth of useless bits on your HDD if you "bought" it digital, and those quotes around "bought" were deliberate).

Basically, anything that places a barrier between me and my ability to play the game when I want and without its continued existence having to be dependent on some third party (not in the game dev sense).

.... You are not a happy man.

Yeah. It was because 3D was the new thing. We still do it today. The push for 4K. Is the equivalent. It's gonna take a while, till it works. It's been two generations, and we still don't have 1080p 60fps consoles, that just work. Without faults, cutbacks, or some other crap.

I don't know about the situation where you live, but in the U.S. at least video games are cheaper now than they've ever been.

Yeah here in Mexico is the complete opposite
