Related to the above, the fact that 2D sprite-based graphics have been ignored by nearly everyone except indie devs over most of the past 21-22 years. Even games with 2D gameplay rarely have sprite-based graphics and instead opt for 3D graphics. Sure, many genres work better with 3D graphics, but some would still work with that old pixel art look and 2D gameplay. I think Arc System Works are the last devs that could qualify as "AAA" that still support sprite-based graphics in their games. To continue on the topic of 2D vs 3D, something that bugged the hell out of me back in the latter half of the 90s was how nearly the entire industry abandoned not just sprites, but 2D gameplay in general, even though many series and genres worked better in 2D and looked better with sprite-based graphics. The industry just jumped headlong into 3D, and for years most games struggled with piss-poor controls, bad cameras, and visuals that, unless they were going for something cartoony, looked bad even back then and has aged even worse. 2D has had a modest resurgence, though it's still mostly an indie thing, and the industry has since moved past the growing pains of the early days of the shift to 3D. |
Yeah. It was because 3D was the new thing. We still do it today. The push for 4K. Is the equivalent. It's gonna take a while, till it works. It's been two generations, and we still don't have 1080p 60fps consoles, that just work. Without faults, cutbacks, or some other crap.
