[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

Around the Network

The console version of the system leaves a lot to be desired, at least in my opinion. It excels as a premium handheld (altho I have some minor grips with kickstand quality, cartridge slot quality, and wiggling of joycons when in handheld mode that make the hardware build feel cheapened a bit from an otherwise really well built machine).

Its the dock...good grief the dock...I hate it. Every time I dock my system I wish I could just use a USB-C-HDMI adapter I already own (believe me I tried to use it, Nintendo has set it up so video-out does not work with these adapters forcing you to use the dock. Yay unnecessary corporate greed!). The dock is perhaps the lowest quality (and most ridiculously priced at $90) piece of hardware I have seen in a very long time from a console company. Not even decent, let alone premium feeling plastic, its about as cheap feeling as possible. Its known to damage screens already. Its just a bunch of plastic surrounding a conversion board they are charging 2-3x the price for. I was hoping this dock in the end would provide a little more power or stability due to having the charging to the handheld, but from my experience thus far Zelda runs far better in handheld than docked. Hopefully its just something unique to the game and not a running issue with the system because the frame loss on Zelda while docked can be pretty brutal at times.

It's alright, the barebones OS doesn't make it feel like dynamic or anything, and the quality is alright I guess.

I dunno, I just prefer portable mode.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I don't think the problem is the hardware. Sounds more like layer 8 to me.

Ridiculous, someone thinks they can make sly technical references in the hope that it won't be understood right?

Yes I really hoped, but nothing escapes your cunning eye it seems. Except frame drops.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Quality in what regard?
OS is fast and responding, controls variation are good, going from portable mode to dock mode is very easy, fast and practical, only negative thing we have is that Zelda BotW has frame drops is dock mode but I dont know if that can be consider for quality.

Docked mode is solid. The speed you move through menus is excellent and even going from hand held to docked mode is seamless and underrated.

The games I have look great on my 46 inch (Zelda, 1 2 Switch, Fast RMX). I think they all look, "better" or more impressive in hand held mode due to pixel density which makes me laugh at people that thought 1080p screen was mandatory. My friends thought my tablet was 1080p and it was only 720p. Anyway, does it compete with PS4 or XBOX One graphically? No. Is it serviceable enough that having the ability to take the game on the road makes up for the deficit? I think yes.

Also not to be understated is the multiple controller options. I know you can do this in table top mode but the truth is, on the television it feels complete and different to table top. It feels like a true upgrade in the comfort you are afforded while playing video games.

I prefer TV mode than handheld mode.

It looks fine, I have a 1080p TV not 4k so everything looks crisp and clear. Yea Zelda drops frames occasionally when docked, but Fast RMX looks stunning. It has bright colours, and everything runs at 1080p and at a blistering 60fps.

It's very solid. The console feels faster than the Wii U (duh) and the transition from portable to home mode is very seamless. In terms of graphics it's roughly the same jump as from GC to Wii. Games will look like Wii U games with some additional shine and higher resolution in docked mode. Bomberman is a blast with 3 players (need a second pair of Joy-Con).

I had this random problem that my TV would shut off while the Switch was docked after 2 hours, no idea why. And at one point the green light (for TV output) on the dock was on but my TV said there was no signal. Inserting the console again solved the problem, I hope this won't occur frequently.

All in all I'm pleased. It's not a PS4 level console so I'd definitely recommend a PS4 or Xbox One for epic single-player games but it's a great console for party games and taking those party games with you on the go. It was designed to be played together with other people and it does that job really well.

Quick question as someone who has never actually seen a Switch in the flesh so to speak. Is the dock doing anything that couldn't be done by a third party add on? If I buy a Switch I will need 2 docks and the £80 price seems ridiculous to say the least. I just wondered if there is anything about the dock that would prevent a third party making a cheap compatible version?

I bought 2 wii u pro controllers from Aliexpress for £8 each yet the official models were £40 each with no difference in quality apart from a missing wii u logo. Will I have a chance of getting a compatible version for £15 elsewhere.
