Shrines are extremely simplistic miniature dungeons that contain one or two puzzles for the player to solve. I believe there's four dungeons (comparable to old Zelda games) total in BotW, not counting the final area.

Thanks so much. That makes a lot more sense. I was like, I know the game is big, but this is sounding ridiculous.

I take it the Shrines are fun, even being simplistic?

Personally, I haven't found the few that I've been through that enjoyable. The ones I've been through have essentially been extended tutorials (the puzzles are very simplistic) for the abilities you get. That will probably change; I can't imagine there's a hundred or so new abilities out there, so presumably some are based around just being puzzle solving adventures, but I can't comment on that at the moment.

The term perfect comes from it being a perfect score. Not a perfect game. Theres a difference.

Congrats to Zelda. One of if not the best openworld games iv ever played. Nintendo just told the industry you don't need power to make good games. Thats coming from me who just paid $2600 on a new PC.

Indeed. Plenty games out there that aren't perfect but get perfect scores anyways.

I was playing Breath of the Wild through the tutorial part on the Plateau and was like  "this is pretty damn good, but 100/100?" and then I got out of plateau and was shocked by the quality of the world.

Looks great, feels great to control, things like cooking and degradable weapons are actually kind of fun and charming (unlike the swarm of survival games these days).

Ocarina of Time is probably my favorite game of all time and I'm not sure if this game will match its perfection of charm, however Breath of the Wild has got to be one of the most innovative games in a long time. It plays vaguely familiar to previous Zelda games but with such drastic changes and overall scope that its fascinating that they appear to have managed to balance it all so well.

I'm not that far along yet, keep getting distracted and I was screwing around in Fast RMX some, but this is one of the few games I've played in like the last half decade where I've actually gotten absorbed in a similar manner to a lot of games from my childhood. I think a thing a lot of games these days are missing, especially open world ones, is an identity and charm.

my first reaction at the reviews was maybe it was overhyped but its one of those games that when you play it you realize that it is insanely unique and basically a new experience in gaming with how well it fits together a lot of old concepts and new. And IMO its one of the prettiest games I've ever seen, like especially in handheld mode, it looks insane. I've been screenshotting the shit out of things while out in nature. never have played an open world game that achieved such success when it comes to a paintery realism (and Wind Waker is far more cartoony so I wouldn't really consider them akin to one another).

I mean jesus, the cute foxes that run up. The movement and flow of the world is great

Amazing internet journalism from nintendoeverything.com.

And that is only one of the 3 platforms It was on. It has plenty more on PS3 and PC.

edit: after a quick check GTAV also has more across all platforms.

Can someone (in a non-spoilery way) outline the difference between a shrine and say a temple in Zelda's of old? Because 12 shrines sounds like a tonne lol.

A shrine is like say two or three rooms off a normal temple each with its own puzzle to solve. There is around 120 of these in game. Once complete they act as warp points. There is a much bigger reason to complete them though

The first four are tutorial.  After that it's up to youto work out the solution.  I've done  12 I think, non have been rocket science but one had me stumped for ages, I had to youtube it

They vary a lot. Most are 1 or 2 puzzle long, with an extra puzzle for a treasure chest. There is one I remember that was practically a dungeon just in depth, puzzles, enemies and treasures, but is still very short. There are some that are actually in the overworld! Those are really cool, but also really hard.

They are a pretty good replacement of linear or predictable dungeons (go in, need item, get item, solve everything with item), but I have played over 40 Shrines now, and I'm getting a little sick of it. They feel never ending! Although this is something I can easily fix by myself: change my focus in the game from Shrines to something else (story, exploration, sidequests)... but it ain't easy. If I see a Shrine, I have to complete it.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I hate to ruin the party, but this is a not true. GTAIV for 360 currently have 48 perfect scores compared to Breath of the Wild. But Breath of the Wild may (hopefully!) still pass it as I do not think GTAIV deserves all those perfect scores.

I think the initial hype surrounding GTA IV pushed review scores higher. It was clear once the dust settled that the game wasn't nearly as good as critics were stating.

The more I hear, the more I want to play it goddamit. Sounds like an awesome game and I love certain things I have seen already. Also, I need to play it myself to see, but considering my vast experience with Dead Rising I bet I won't have any problem with weapon degradation. Those games had some weaponry that broke like it was glass. xD
