Forums - Nintendo - My Switch Impressions

Just a few impressions.

- Generally pretty positive. I think this is the future for Nintendo (the hybrid approach). You can tell within a few hours of using the system why Nintendo chose this direction. The system is quite portable even IMO if you're willing to put it in a coat pocket with joycons removed. Form factor is great, I don't miss the 3DS/DS dual screen layout at all (seeya).

- It doesn't feel like a toy at all, in fact it doesn't really feel like a Nintendo product in a lot of ways. Feels like something Nvidia or Microsoft would make. I can see kids wrecking the crap out of this thing. Gotta be careful when docking it and removing joycons.

- System gets pretty hot when docked and is very warm to the touch sometimes when you initially grab it out of the dock.

- Ergonomics are ok. It's not as comfortable as a Vita (version 1), but it's comfy enough. It's actually thinner than a first rev Vita. I find taking the Joycons off kinda hard sometimes.

- Kickstand is pretty flimsy (another thing I could see kids destroying in short order).

- Fast RMX is quite good and only $20, Zelda is Zelda as many people have already said. Wish Mario Kart was available. Got Shovel Knight as well but haven't played that one too much yet.

- The dock is unneccessarily big if that's mostly hollow plastic. I think they could have made that a lot smaller, which would have been better because the dock would have been more portable. Maybe Nintendo will consider a smaller travel dock or something for people who travel with their Switch a lot.

- I like the concept overall, though it feels like it's a chipset revision (a Tegra X2 or whatever the real successor to the X1 is) away from being juuuuust right. 400 GFLOP undocked/1 TFLOP docked + a larger display (shrink that bezel) would make this idea really cook. It's still workable now but you can kinda tell it could use a future revision to really get to another level. But the whole concept I think is correct, I could see Nintendo basically following this template for another 5-10 years.

- Screen quality is good (a godsend if you're coming from 3DS), but I wouldn't say it's great. I'd like to see a Switch Pro with a 1080p screen some day.

- I wonder how 3DS/DS virtual handheld could work on this? Maybe with special control joycons for the vertical sides of the system? That would work, the only problem is on the right verticle side you have the heat exhaust which could be blocked. But I'd really like to see DS/3DS virtual console.

- Pro controller is ace, very comfy. Joycons in the Joycon Grip are usable enough but Pro Controller is superior. Takes a second to get used to using the smaller buttons actually if you're playing at home and then jumping into portable play. Pro Controller comes with a USB Type C cable so you can use that as your travel charging cable if you're using the Switch on an airplane/train (as many have USB power outlets these days).

- No d-pad on the left joycon really sucks. Nintendo's gonna have to release a Joycon that has a proper d-pad on it, hopefully when the Virtual Console launches at least.

Glad you're happy with it. You playing mostly portable mode?

Yeah, I have yet to get mine but will soon. Hopefully the pros outweigh the cons.

It's actually been more 70/30 home/portable split so far. I just got into Zelda so I've been playing on the TV mostly.

Friend of mine looking at the plus button on my Switch " it looks cool but the d pad on the right joycon is very small"

Sounds good, screen is better than the Wii U gamepad as well so the resolution will definitely look nice to me

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

It's a nicely made system yet I find it more uncomfortable to use than the WiiU gamepad. The joy-cons don't fit my hands very well. Too bad the pro controller is over CAD 100 here, don't want to spend that much on a bloody controller. I guess I'll skip fast rmx, it was already painful to play on the gamepad, doubt it will hurt less on the switch. The shoulder buttons are uncomfortable to use in combination with the face or d-pad buttons.

I've used it as a handheld with Zelda, works well, but prefer to play on my projector. I had to move the Switch closer to me with a longer hdmi cable to stop the joy-cons from disconnecting. Really those joy-cons ugh. Instead of a grip Nintendo should have put a real controller in the box.

Luckily Zelda is amazing, can't stop playing.

I'm really pleased with the feel of the console, I haven't tried it unlocked yet but Zelda looks great on the TV, and gives the sort of wow factor that I remember from the 64 games.

When Link walks out of the shrine at the start and you see the Vista before you I just grinned like an idiot, it's wonderful.

I don't think the Joycons are difficult to use, I have large hands which I thought would make it harder to use such a small controller, it doesn't. My gripe with them is that they can be difficult to remove and take the shoulder button bumper off when deployed as smaller controllers. I would be annoyed at the lack of a charging controller but considering their 10 hour battery life that would seem unreasonable. I'm hoping that Nintendo will in time bring out a controller dock that both charges and has a headphone slot. For these small niggly reasons you can see it was rushed to market for BOTW.

I do also miss the dual screens of the Wii u, a concept that I find it hard to live without now, I LOVED having a map on the screen in front of me, or being able to equip items/arrange my inventory. Can anyone imagine playing xcx having to navigate to a menu map? An idea dead before it's time, and while Nintendo hinted they may provide backwards compatibility for older controllers I'm pretty sure they mean wiimotes and pro controllers, I doubt the switch has power capacity to spare to run the external screen of the Wii u gamepad

All in all though I'm extremely happy with the console, playing 1-2 switch with my girlfriend and Zelda solo I don't feel like I've been ripped off at all. Zelda is absolutely one of those games you HAVE to experience, and as the positive reviews and hype roll out I think it will push systems. Hence why nintendo rushed this console, they know it's a system defining game and would have been wasted on the already sentenced U.

I've seen people criticizing the price, saying you wouldn't take a device of this value out of the house, like they seemingly forgot the cost of their smartphones.. New iPhones generally at double the cost for instance.

The peripheral price will come down, it always does after manufacturing is refined and ramped up.

But I'm a very happy switch owner and don't understand any doom and gloom over the system.

My only issue so far is the flimsy kickstand.

What I like is the ease of setting controller position and choosing which controller at start up.
