Just a few impressions.
- Generally pretty positive. I think this is the future for Nintendo (the hybrid approach). You can tell within a few hours of using the system why Nintendo chose this direction. The system is quite portable even IMO if you're willing to put it in a coat pocket with joycons removed. Form factor is great, I don't miss the 3DS/DS dual screen layout at all (seeya).
- It doesn't feel like a toy at all, in fact it doesn't really feel like a Nintendo product in a lot of ways. Feels like something Nvidia or Microsoft would make. I can see kids wrecking the crap out of this thing. Gotta be careful when docking it and removing joycons.
- System gets pretty hot when docked and is very warm to the touch sometimes when you initially grab it out of the dock.
- Ergonomics are ok. It's not as comfortable as a Vita (version 1), but it's comfy enough. It's actually thinner than a first rev Vita. I find taking the Joycons off kinda hard sometimes.
- Kickstand is pretty flimsy (another thing I could see kids destroying in short order).
- Fast RMX is quite good and only $20, Zelda is Zelda as many people have already said. Wish Mario Kart was available. Got Shovel Knight as well but haven't played that one too much yet.
- The dock is unneccessarily big if that's mostly hollow plastic. I think they could have made that a lot smaller, which would have been better because the dock would have been more portable. Maybe Nintendo will consider a smaller travel dock or something for people who travel with their Switch a lot.
- I like the concept overall, though it feels like it's a chipset revision (a Tegra X2 or whatever the real successor to the X1 is) away from being juuuuust right. 400 GFLOP undocked/1 TFLOP docked + a larger display (shrink that bezel) would make this idea really cook. It's still workable now but you can kinda tell it could use a future revision to really get to another level. But the whole concept I think is correct, I could see Nintendo basically following this template for another 5-10 years.
- Screen quality is good (a godsend if you're coming from 3DS), but I wouldn't say it's great. I'd like to see a Switch Pro with a 1080p screen some day.
- I wonder how 3DS/DS virtual handheld could work on this? Maybe with special control joycons for the vertical sides of the system? That would work, the only problem is on the right verticle side you have the heat exhaust which could be blocked. But I'd really like to see DS/3DS virtual console.
- Pro controller is ace, very comfy. Joycons in the Joycon Grip are usable enough but Pro Controller is superior. Takes a second to get used to using the smaller buttons actually if you're playing at home and then jumping into portable play. Pro Controller comes with a USB Type C cable so you can use that as your travel charging cable if you're using the Switch on an airplane/train (as many have USB power outlets these days).
- No d-pad on the left joycon really sucks. Nintendo's gonna have to release a Joycon that has a proper d-pad on it, hopefully when the Virtual Console launches at least.
