Probably not. Sony seems to be doing well with the 85+ range while also having third party support.

Very good point. I love both philosophies though. Sony and Nintendo just can't stop making great games

Doubt it, but Metacritic is pretty bad if you want to look at the overall score of a game, mainly because lower tier journalists, much... much lower, can pretty much go against the grain and rate an undoubtedly good game a negative review and that brings down a games score by quite a lot actually. Just look at Quarter to Three's Last of US review, albeit it wasn't negative, it was mixed, it was a poor way to get clicks. Last of US should have been a 96.

Why is 97 a magic number? Are games below 97 somehow shit and not worth playing now? Was it only chosen because the OP realised there are no Sony exclusives at 97, but there are Sony exclusives at 96 and 95?

Really, the difference between a 97 meta and a 96 meta is one review score. It's meaningless and trivial. Indeed the difference between 90 and 97 is trivial for as review aggregator.
