Never thought a Zelda title would be on a path to 10 million, like others have said it's a very niche series.

Even if we disregard Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time sold over 7 million and Twilight Princess over 8 million. These are not niche numbers.

4 out of 18 titles (I say 4 because the original on NES had high numbers too) were smashes commercially over a 30 year period. Like I said before the game is HUGE within the gaming community, it's not a popular title among even casual gamers. Which is why it didn't sell well comparatively on the Wii with a 100m install base. The game appeals to a select group of people, albeit a big group it's not a mainstream game. Though I think BoTW is changing that as we speak

Isn’t “niche” just a synonym of genre?

It did sell well on Wii though; Twilight Princess on Wii sold better than all but 5 PS2 games and the PS2 had a 150 million userbase. So adjusting for the 50% larger base, by that logic, only 3 PS2 games sold well.

Fair enough point, but then again Ocarina sold huge numbers comparatively on only a 33m or so user base. So to me Ocarina is/was the most mainstream Zelda game up until BoTW

Lol no. People may know the characters of Sonic and Donkey Kong, but nobody in this 'real world' gives a sh*t about their respective franchises. Same goes for Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat. Nobody you'd ask on the streets is going to recognize a single screenshot of those. NBA2K alongside Madden is also only a semblance of a thing in the US. The only thing people would recognize is the face of Mario, and probably Pikachu.

Purely anecdotal, on all of our parts to be quite honest. The only true way to prove recognizance of franchises would be to conduct a legitimate poll.

You use the term so loosely that it could be applied to any video game IP. Once it applies to everything, it loses all meaning and becomes a redundant word.

The common understanding and use of the term describes games with small, but dedicated audiences. Basically, titles that almost always sell below 1m units and have thus failed to reach massmarket appeal.

According to???

Again, this whole drawn out argument was over my choice of verbiage...which according to the literal definition is correct.

My point is that things that no longer are actively popular will get forgotten and things that may never have been as popular as them will actually be "better known."  Do you get what I'm trying to say?

There's also another thing you failed to take into account.  It's the fact that new people are being born all the time.  Things like Zelda existed a long time ago, too.  However, with games like Sonic not as many people who are being born now will know the game.  So you combine the people in the past that knew Zelda with the people now that still know Zelda, it could very likely be more known in an active kind of way.

Disagree with Sonic, every kid nowadays still knows it. It's definitely remained relevant far better than the likes of Mortal Kombat or even Donkey Kong.

When's the last time a Sonic game sold past a million though?
