Forums - Gaming - It's a bad thing the Switch isn't being sold at a loss?

I don't get the title is it a statement or a question?

Of all the criticisms I've seen of the Switch, this is one of the criticisms I don't really get.

I mean I can get paid internet being controversial, that the game lineup isn't as top heavy as a Rob Liefeld character, or that the Switch isn't running 4K, even if just minutely. But being mad Nintendo isn't selling at a loss seems....manufactured.

Like complaining the Switch can't cook pop-tarts or something.

Quick question:  Do we know that the Switch is not being sold for a loss.    How would we even qualify that without knowing R&D costs and the like... let alone the total production costs?  We can't know the answer to this at all... so yes a complaint about it would be completely manufactured.

Who pays 700$ / 800$ for a phone? Mostly Americans for iPhones I assume.

I bought Xiaomi Mi5 64gb with Snapdragon 830 (same as in Galaxy S7), 3 gb of ram for 249$ from China.

It's obvious Nintendo got a bit greedy with pricing here, least they could do is bundle Zelda or even 1-2 Switch with it.

So you got a phone with a worse processor, less ram, presumably smaller screen, and without any sort of controller for 50$ less than a Switch.

That makes it seem like the Switch is pretty fairly priced actually. Worst case Scenario you bought something  more powerful than your phone wit the added price of a physical controller on top of it. Yes the phone has two cameras and presumably an antenna for 4G and talking, but I don't really think that covers the cost of the controllers with HD rumble the IR sensor and motion controls.

In gaming, yes. I don't understand how a handheld home console with console quality games for 300$ when most phones are 700-800$ when they first release is ridiculous tbh

You still don't get it do you?

  • Phones cost ~$260 to make but are sold for over $600 because the are hardware that stands on their own. Once a customer buys the phone they customer has no real business with the phone manufacturer anymore.  As can be said about practically every other consumer electroni ouut there

  • This is not the case with consoles. Getting you to buy a console is the manufacturer literally putting their foot in the door to your wallet for the forseeable future. Their business with you starts the second you buy the console, not ends.

  • This is why consoles are the only consumer electronic that are sold for very little to no mark up (typically) because its more important getting more hardware units in peoples hands than making money on the individual hardware. Because there is more money to be made from software, accessories and now services.

  • And lastly, even with smartphones (and I have been avoiding bringing this up because I figured you knew but now I am beginning to doubt that), NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE pay $600+ for their phones. The mobile carriers pays that amount to the phone manufacturer. Everyone else just pays anything from $0/ $50/$100/$200 for their phones initially and then pay $30/$40 every month for their service plan for the next 2 years.

Why? Becaus I chose to ignore the "console quality games" part of your post?

Are you aware that most phones today are capable of rendering "console quality games" if the wiiU is your standard of comparison? But look, we ae going round in circles, so lets just agree to disagree.

I have said it multiple times already. I do not thin the NS is worth $299. Its ok if you do and its ok if I don't. Doesn't really change much, just means that everyone that thnks like you will most likely buy it. And everyone that thinks like me will most likely wait till they think its either worth it or cheaper.

They are capable of rendering a game of smaller scale that looks 50% like a Wii U game and does not look like a Switch game at all while the Switch is docked, yes.

And tbh I don't know why you insist on arguing and then back away with "But again I'm not discussing this..." why are you trying to change my opinion if you aren't willing to open your mind to others? That's like saying "Think from this perspective for a second" in a debate then backing out when it's someone elses turn. To be fair though you are right, it doesn't matter much. We'll have to wait and see how good it sells.

i'm much more upset about the fact that it can't cook poptarts

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
