launch aligning things is irrelevant if not comsiderring the state of the respective markets.

I will try.

PS2 ( Jap March 2000, USA October 2000 ) launched before Xbox OG ( November 2001 ) and Gamecube (  December 2001 ). PC gaming was a dirty mess back in the days. 299$ is the price.

PS4 launched after WIi U, same month as Xbox One. PC gaming is strong.399$ is the price.

Thats not entirely comparing the states of the markets though........

more like this.....

  • PS2 sold 12M in 3 years in japan. PS3 sold under 11M in 7 years in japan. PS4 has sold 4M in just under 3 years in japan.
  • PS2 came at a time when there was no competition for gaming dollars. Now we don't just have PC we also have mobile.
  • PS2 had a lower cost of entry and came at a time when there was a massive media shift (VHS to DVD)
If you want to launch allighn, rather than look at how many months the PS4 as a whole had the entire market, isolate it to the regions. So take when the PS4 was released in japan and launch align it with japan sales of the PS2.
As i said, this whole launch aligning thing only makes sense if you are looking at the specific markets in quetion. Now this would all be different if PS4 japanese performance is whats responsible for its sales. It isn't.

Nintendo sales does not affect PS/Xbox sales in reality, especially if we talk about handhelv vs home console. This is simple another, different market.

If Wii/Wiiu sales are anything close to a factor, bots X1 and PS4 shall do gangbang sales and PS3/360 shall got numbers like... a Wii U ?

I also think they will appeal to a different market. The hardcore gamers who play 3rd party games will chose between PS4 and X1. Nintendo wil most likely cater to casuals, kids and hardcore gamers who want a second console. I'm just considering the possibility it could interfere, but I'm 90% sure it won't, as you pointed.

A bit off-topic but: Last gen we had close to 280M combined sales. A good portion were casuals. But let's say that PS4 achieves 130M. X1 is generally losing by 2:1, so it's reasonable to assume it does 60 to 70M. This would put this gen at almost 210M (including Wii U). If Switch is mildly sucessful, like 50M, we would be at 260M. If this gen performs a bit above expectations, it could as well end up close or even above the last one. In any case, it won't be way behind the last one as most predict.

Beating PS2

This is just insane

Amazing sales!!! Completely deserved, Playstation 4 is a fantastic console!!!

Holy shit it's going for the PS2.
But i really think it's deserved at least for last 2-3 months we had some amazing games releasing for PS4.
Just we have to wait and see about Pictures division, they are really dragging them down.

Hmmm...thats strange didnt Nintendo just post a 600million profit vs. PlayStation's 413million? Am I missing something?

Edit: Oops, revenue, don't mind my stupidity.

You should then also keep in mind that the Japanese console market was much more vibrant for consoles in the PS2 era, we live in a Global market now. They are right sold is sold with the west having to make up a giant fall in Japanese sales these days.

One can guess what will happen if PS4 would be Japan-only until mid 2014.

I guess Sony would stop production of the PS4 already.

So yes the very reason it launched last in Japan, but you didnt seem to make that counter point to start with that it launched 4 months later in Japan. Japan is a dying market. Same reason why Nintendo is doing a world wide release for Switch, its the only sensible thing to do these days.

Some great numbers, but 3.7m PS4s on shelves/in warehouses on January 1st seems quite a lot.
I just checked last year's numbers, they had 35.9m PS4s sold through at January 3rd 2016 and 37.7m shipped at December 31st 2015, so that was 1.8m PS4s on shelves/in warehouses.

Well, we are in febuary now... so some sales have bound to have been made. Then again so has some new shipments.

Guess if we see a massive drop in the 4Q shipment numbers then we know they probably overshipped in 3Q.
