Because the American press didnt play it at the same time as the EU press (who played it a couple days earlier).
The embargo is to allow ALL media outlets to release their stories at the same time, for fair share of public attention on each outlets work.
if the EU press got to post their impressions before the US press even had time to formulate any, then what point is the info from those US outlets, since the base info on the game is exactly the same, outside of opinions? That is not fair to that sect of journalists. This is fair: they have all played it. They have all been given time to formulate their thoughts. They all publish at the same time for everyone to read.
And are getting new info and new media for the game. The embargo is not any different from Sony (or any publisher) deciding on a specific date to release new info.
If you can understand a review embargo then it shouldnt be difficult to understand a preview embargo.

Thanks for that explanation. Makes sense now I guess... or at least in situations like these.
I could get review embargoes because i felt that gives or rather ensures that everyone has sufficient time to play the game and not just rush throuh it to get a review out ASAP. Well, except when the publisher is being funny and trying to ensure reviews aren't seen until the day of the games release.
