Forums - Gaming - When did DLC started to go so wrong?

??? Left Behind happens mid-game and before the game. It's not close to the ending at all, so what do you mean by that you're looking at TLoU?

It started way before that, Prince of Persia (2008) had the real ending locked behind a $9.99 DLC epilogue.  The only reason I might buy that eventually is because I got the game dirt cheap digitally.  That epilogue will cost me more then the main game.

I disagree. A lot of games used DLC to breathe new life into games, or bring in some interesting new ideas and mechanics for the games.
DLC done right: Splatoon, Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, Dying Light: The Following
GTA 5 didn't receive story based or single player expansions because all the focus was on the multiplayer. Online is certainly more profitable to Rockstar rather than $20 story based expansions (which is quite unfortunate).

DLC done wrong: COD map and gun packs, season passes that don't actually include everything, the sims: stuff packs, Dead rising 4(the ending is locked behind an upcoming paid DLC)

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Since they kept prices stable for new games, at least in US $60.

20 years ago we had $50-$70+ games and prices did not drop quickly, plus you take inflation into account.

Companies come up with new ways to get you to pay more to make up for used game sales and lack of rising price for games.

The entire idea of DLC in my conception is to provide a influx of new and significant content on games already released

For publishers, the entire concept of DLC is to make more money, and to do that as efficiently as possible. Unfortunately that's often in conflict with what you wish from DLC.

Metal Gear Rising Reverence had the typical DLC for a costume but also had DLC done right with 2 story expansions...for free. Jetstream Sam and Bladewolf.

Oblivion Horse Armor.

DLC could be used in a positive way, but the negatives examples tend to be the news that's most spread out for people to see. Witcher 3 I hear had some damn good DLC

Ahahaha all the talk of the Oblivion Horse Armour. Was that really the first time something like that (cosmetic, micro-transaction) style of DLC was offered? At least in a mainstream setting.

When DLC pack was announced before the game even came out
