Forums - Gaming - Switch online requires Phone App? Why is no one talking about this?

It doesn't "require" the phone app. Its an added feature if you want to control a friends list or voice chat, etc. If you just jump on to play a game, then you just do that without the phone app. I'm not even sure how you pulled that it is required out of any of the information that has come out so far.

Or to put it another way, it is mandatory to have a smartphone app if you want to "...voice chat, ...do matchmaking, and create [a] lobby."  None of these common features of online gaming should require a second device. All of those functions should be contained within the Switch, so that Switch is a full featured gaming device able to operate independantly of anything other than a network connection.

Now one logical thing would be if you are using your smartphone as a wi fi hotspot, because you have a wi fi only Switch, then clearly you need the smartphone, so having a companion app to be able to manage certain things with the app, if you want to, when connected to a network through your phone, is a nice, completely optional even when connected through a phone, extra. But that is not how Reggie's answer reads.

The problem isn't that it's "another" option. It's the ONLY option if you want to use a lobby or voice chat.

I disagree

uuuuhhhhhh what? You...disagree?

I mean...I guess technically you could go without voice chat...or use a different console. But I don't think those are reasonable suggestions for someone who wants to play the Switch online.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

It may be built into the games. I don't get the obsession with this, when was voice chatting with random people in games a good idea?

Its just not the only option.

The Switch will require using an app for voice chat. So, if that's enough to put you off the system, I wouldn't bother putting money aside for it. Sorry, it was a clunky post.

Well, VC isn't the main one, it requiring a phone to make lobbies/matchmaking is the main one.

If it's an optional feature, I am good but if it is the only method, then fuck dat.

Oh, I mean...all of the matchmaking seems to be done through the app if Reggie isn't mispeaking over and over again.

So if I'm a gamer who wants to play online with the Switch and wants to talk to my friends in game but don't want to use the app what's my alternative?

Explain the purpose. What super feature is worth lugging a second device with you that has the same cpabilities as the Switch?

Its a multitasking world. If you want to do 2 things at once

So it's just as easy as holding the Switch with your two hands and then just use your third hand to make things happen on the device you're already holding by using a second device. Got it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I'm still in denial so
