He's basically proving my point about some Nintendo fans only wanting them to stay in the HW biz out of pride and not what they bring to the market HW-wise.  There is little to no reason to believe Nintendo games would decrease in quality if they went 3rd party.  Unless, they are saying that Pokemon Go and Mario Run are utter shit.  Of course, they wouldn't say that, as I'm sure they think that they are among the better mobile games out there.

And Sega can't be brought into this, as when they quit HW, they were practically bankrupt and had lower budgets for games and kinda had to push whatever out to make money.  Nintendo is in a much better situation finacially, but are in the same HW situation.  It's not that their HW is crap, it just doesn't appeal to gamers, mainly due to lack of power and support from 3rd parties.  And, lately, Nintendo's reliance on control gimmicks to sell their HW.  It doesn't help that Nintendo has had a rough time adapting to HD, which has delayed most, if not all, of their games and has led to game droughts.  I could see the same thing happening to the Switch.

I agree about the pride thing, that probably has something to do with it. Me, I just want this to happen for selfish reasons. I want all my games, friends, and online subs (Nintendo has one now) on one machine.

I guess I'll admit, one downside for me is: there's less chance of some cool new thing, like how cool Wii was. I loved playing motion games with friends.

Regarding those games: I don't know/care if they're among the best mobile games, but I do know I don't like them. I tried to get into Pokemon Go, Miitomo, and also checked out videos of Mario Run. They're not for me, nor is mobile gaming in general. I dunno how that relates to this topic, though. And yeah, Nintendo is in a much better position that Sega was.

That's actually one of the reasons I hope they would actually go 3rd party and not full mobile.  If they go mobile they'll be focusing on casuals almost 100%, which means they'll most likely make their games smaller and more linear.  Or on autopilot with a few screen taps from the player.  Sure, they'll find success there, but 3rd party would allow them to continue making the games the same as they have been.  Only larger, if they wish, and with incredible graphics at 1080p/60 fps.  4K on Pro/Scorpio and next gen consoles.

Well, glad it looks fun to you.  But, I highly doubt it will be successful.  Not with the ads I've seen for it.  Eating a hamburger?  Counting balls?  Only thing remotely interesting about it is the quickdraw, but most people are still going to rather play a video game on TV.  Even with the Wii, Nintendo knew this.  And definitely not $350 worth of content there.

As for Move, maybe you are missing my point.  Wouldn't be the first time.  I just said that MOTION CONTROLS ARE A GIMMICK AND PEOPLE ARE GETTING TIRED OF GIMMICKS.  Again, look at the failure of Wii U and Kinect for evidence. How does that translate to I want Nintendo to make Move games.  I'm just saying if they HAVE to make motion control games, there are options.  Personally, and I think most would agree (especially before the reveal), they just want Nintendo to make good games that don't force gimmicks into them.  Something they can definitely do as a 3d party.

Success is irrelevant to what I said. I said it looks fun, and would not be replicable on the other two consoles. Success doesn't matter. The Dreamcast wasn't a success yet was an amazing console filled to the brim with quality, innovative software. I am sure the latest Britney Spears album is a success, yet I'll still gladly say no thanks.

Wii U failed because of software and marketing, not gimmicks. Either way, not relevant to how fun the game looks or how possible it might be utilizing niche, optional extra hardware on other platforms.

They can make great games without gimmicks on their own platforms. They have each gen, no reason they won't this gen.

Not true, but w/e.

Interesting you name the Dreamcast.  Hmm, what happened after the Dreamcast?

A part of me wants everyone to go third party because then I would only have to invest in PC components every so often, it would be pretty convenient. But I actually kind of like all the quirky hardware that Nintendo (and everyone else) makes, even if it frustrates me sometimes. Life would be a lot less interesting without their machines.

It is true. Hell, with Move and Kinect both being virtually unused now, why would Nintendo even include the motion controls in Arms, or even make a game like 1,2 Switch? There's a difference between building a game from the ground up for your own hardware with controls that you know every single user will have access to, and Kinect/Move. The Xbone doesn't even come with the Kinect any more, and Move is equally forgotten.

After the DC, Sega went third party and have went way downhill. There's simply no comparison between DC era Sega and what they are now. You just proved my point, thanks.

I'm not sure Nintendo could compete with other third party developers. They keep making their own underpowered consoles so they don't have to compete in the current graphics race. Nintendo going third party would throw them directly into the fire.

I don't really think it's necessary at this point or advantageous for Nintendo to drop HW and go 3rd party. It's not like they're in dire straights. As bad as the Wii U failed, the 3DS is still doing very well for them...

Funnily enough, that's exact what many Nintendo fans said about Ninty developing games for mobile. The vast majority said there was no way and that since Ninty had like 20 billion in the bank, they could survive for x number of years just fine. Fast forward to the release of Pokemon Go and the narrative changed as those saying they should make games for mobiles were proven right.

It'd be interesting to see how long it takes for Ninty to go 3rd party and how people here will react.

The problem with Nintendo going third party outright is I don't think they'd simply be as good of a company that way.

They wouldn't bother to try ideas like Splatoon or ARMS or bring back niche IP like Kid Icarus or Pilotwings or Punch-Out! etc. etc.

It would just be Mario/Mario Kart/Smash/Pokemon/Donkey Kong/Kirby/Zelda and maybe Metroid once in a while over and over and over again, just like companies like EA only make FIFA/Star Wars/Battlefield/Madden NFL/NHL, etc.

When you don't have any responsibility to a hardware platform, you have no real responsibility to growing the user base.

It's not like the Switch games look awful or anything, Zelda and Mario and even ARMS all look quite pretty. Would I prefer them running on a 1 TFLOP system at least? Sure. But I do like we are actually getting a real trade off this time in portability ... now I can play these games on long flights, to me that's a big plus, whereas the Wii/Wii U were underpowered for the sake of a controller, and that wore off real quick.

I disagree. Look at companies like Ubisoft and even Activision. Despite having some huge franchises they also make games that don't have much mass appeal and a lot of them flop miserably. That doesn't make them focus on the few guaranteed hits.

Well, no. The people who insisted that Nintendo should make games for mobile were talking about ports of old games and proper sequels. If those people were really proven right, they would have celebrated. Instead they were baffled that 3DS sales went up.

Nope. Not referring to those people. But I'm not surprised that you're focusing on those instead of the ones I'm referring to.

Who else would you be refering to? Nobody on VGC proposed the idea that Nintendo should make smartphone games to increase the sales of their dedicated gaming hardware.

I'm referring to two groups of people: a) those who simply said that Ninty should go mobile (i.e. make games for smartphones as well) without specifying if it should be ports of games or anything, b) (those) Ninty fans who dismissed such an idea claiming that Ninty doesn't need that, because they have so much money, and that such a move would hurt their hardware and sofware sales on 3ds because why buy a 3ds when you can play Pokemon on mobile.

After they saw the success of Pokemon Go they decided to forgot all about their past comments.

Mind linking these posts? I'm not familiar with these comments, and am curious how widespread they were.

Almost impossible (or extremely time consuming) considering that I'm talking about posts that are over 3 years old.
