Forums - Nintendo - The Switch is NOT the 3DS sucessor

It would be a really bad idea for there to another console, after the Switch can cover both bases...

It can't.

The 2ds is sold 100, the 3DS is sold 180.

The Switch is 300-330. It's not in the same class of products in the market.

So, you're using price to determine how console successors work...?

DS wasn't a successor to the Game Boy brand but once it took off they ditched it.

Do you have any good reasons?

Good question.

I am using price to assert they are not in the same category of product. By exemple a 200$ TV don't compete against a 400$ TV.

Nintendo is also targeting, the young and family market with its portable products and the Switch is too expansive for this market.

Yes, it's too expansive and not portable enough.

If "too expensive" was a valid criterion, then the PS3 couldn't be called the successor to the PS2. The XL versions of the 3DS have been selling better than the standard size, Switch is about the same size as a (New) 3DS XL.

So... any good reasons?

The 3DS XL can be closed, the Switch can.

You are all expecting Nintendo to have a single product sold a 300. It would be suicidal with its market.

But 2017 is quite obviously the 3DS's last year at least for 1st party Nintendo support and weather you like it or not the whole selling point of the Switch is that it is BOTH a HANDHELD and a home console. The next fire emblem, the next animal crossing, and for gen 8 for Pokémon (even though its very rumoured the next gen 7 games will be on the Switch anyway) where are they going to be released on? Not 6 year old system that's for sure!

Unless the Switch is hugely successful, which I highly doubt at this price, we are gonna to see a real handheld coming after.

Nintendo won't let his handheld business die.

Yet it will inherit 3DS's software support.

Highly unlikey, the Nintendo Switch has  3ds install base behind who are going to move on to Nintendo's next handheld; The Switch especially it gains its ground and has had its first year of games. Remember how awful the 3ds did at launch? Nintendo did a price drop and it still wasnt until it got a good year or 2 of games until it started gaining ground. Dont like the Switch dont buy it, but dont expect a new handheld until at leats 5+ years from now which will probaly end up being the Switch 2. Maybe wait until the console releases until make your judgement, as soon as this thing gets Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario Odyssey it really can't fail as bad as the Wii U which got NONE of these main series games (3D World was not a true 3D Mario game like Galaxy and of course Odyssey). But dont worry you'll e able to enjoy Nintendo's IOS and Android games which are basically watered down mobile apps like (100% of the current appstore) which main purpose is just to promote the real games coming only to Nintendo Switch! 2017 is gonna be a hype year! Getting it day one $299 is nothing compared to the lastest iPad Pro and it'll even have the same amount of storage as its $799 configuration only you can expand the Switch's memory easily with micro SD cards

It's quite obvious now.

- The 3DS family is starting from 99 to 199 while the Switch is starting at 299 and even 330 in Europe.

- The Switch is not really a portable and can't fit into a pocket

- All the Switch games looks like home console games, not like 3DS handheld games.

- Pokemon doesn't look like it is coming to Switch anytime soon judging by what Gamefreak said.

1) yes the priceing differs. Its a expensive handheld.... but the reason why is it can also play on your tv.

2) you can remove the joy con's, and the 6" screen can fit into some pockets. However you can walk around and play on it, its a portable system.

3) thats the thing, the 3DS has alot of games that are console level in scope and design, its why you play its games instead of mobile phone games.

4) it ll happend at some point.

I believe the switch *IS* the 3DS successor.

When its able to do both, and you have a unified gameing library idea, splitting them up by makeing a new only portable system would be dumb.

Nintendo wont say it because they want to price it as a home console, and because they dont want to hurt 3ds sales, but this is probably it.
