The whole carnival thing is dumb, I never even bothered to update online to get my points to count and I'm sure most other Pokemon players didn't either, since that goal isn't a lot considering how many copies the games sold

How can you fail at something you didn't participate in? The only fail is on Nintendo/Gamefreak's part for not being able to track stats without players having to register to a not well known website. The Splatoon site can track stats without registration so what gives.
