MS can take a risk and lose millions in ill fated games.

A small studio could die, even if they have a moderated success - Irational Games.

And there are less and less independent studio capable of outputing AAA titles.

Irational Games being shut down wasn't that big of a loss since Bioshock wasn't that original.  Team Bondi being shut down was a bigger loss L.A. Noire was one of the most original games of the last generation and the MotionScan technology used in making that game was ahead of its time.

Bioshock is one of the most original ideas I have seen in the AAA space.

Here's my opinion on it. If true, which it's very ell possible. Just by looking at the development, an Shinobi's excellent track record. This is bad news for MS, no spinning it. While the game has looked worse to me, every time they have showed it, this doesn't bode very well for them at all. This is why MS need to invest more in first party as well. 3rd game cancelled now?

Its not bad news for MS. If they cancelled it than its bad news for Platinum. If MS wanted it they would have continued funding it.

I felt Bioshock was much more original in execution than LA Noire.

Bioshock is a contiuation of the System Shock series and Irational Games actually co developed System Shock 2 with Looking Glass Studios.  L.A. Noire was completely original.

Third parties have struggled with Microsoft this gen. A huge difference from last gen. This is inevitable though as they only have about 1/2 the base of the competition so entering in a deal with them means you lose 66% of your potential market share right off the top. So QB, Tomb Raider, the mostly well praised Sunset overdrive, Titanfall crashed and burned (although this is mostly EA's fault but Microsoft chose Battlefield bundle over Titanfall), Recore, Ryse, They have a lot of work to do.

SO, Titanfall, TR, and (to a lesser extent) Ryse all did well and met MS expectations last I heard.

Even so, I feel it was more original in thought and execution.

But it isn't since its just a contination of the System Shock series.  Its just that most people that played any of the Bioshock games never played System Shock 1 or 2 and therefore don't know how similar it is to those games.

My take on all this, and I've been seeing this for a while, is that Microsoft is transitioning all their games to the 'live service' model.

Daniel Ahmad ‏@ZhugeEX
Basically Microsoft want to have their games emulate what Minecraft has been able to do.
Long lifecycle, large user base, Increased spend.

Microsoft's future direction is about being able to offer the Xbox games and live services on multiple devices that run Windows 10.

This right here would be more like another Devil's Third moment.

Ikr?

Scalebound only got the attention it got because of its exclusivity status. The game looked like shit, and it ran like shit. I can't believe the news is upsetting this many gamers.

Well how it looked in terms of what they were promising wasn't shit.  It had potential.  Considering Microsoft last gen had some classic exclusive jrpgs you can see why people were hyped.

Sadly it turned out as you said and now it's vaperware.  A big blow to the xbox exclusive line up.

Perhaps Nintendo is right and it is time to scale down to more manageable hardware. It seems the market isn't big enough to sustain games that aren't a guaranteed hit, and thus can't make back their AAA budget. Too much stuff needs to be added into games nowadays to make them jacks of all trades to appeal to the widest possible audience to justify a big enough budget to stand out graphically.

It's pretty horrible for the developers to get their game cancelled after working so hard on it. This all or nothing approach is hurting the industry.
