Irational Games being shut down wasn't that big of a loss since Bioshock wasn't that original.  Team Bondi being shut down was a bigger loss L.A. Noire was one of the most original games of the last generation and the MotionScan technology used in making that game was ahead of its time.

Bioshock is one of the most original ideas I have seen in the AAA space.
