Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Switch - Go portable mode

Just wondering about the process for organising games on Switch.

Let's say you have your dock setup and connected to a usb 3.0 hard drive of 1tb capacity and you have fitted a 128GB microsd card to the Switch console itself there will be times when your playing a game on your normal tv when you realise you want to continue playing on the go. I'm expecting some sort of functionality that will quickly transfer/move games between an external hard drive and the internal micro sd card. I'm wondering if this can be a background task where you simply choose 'go portable' and even while playing on the big screen the game starts moving itself between the 2 storage systems as you play so by the time you have finished playing it is already ready for portable use.

This would also be important for VR use where you may still have docked performance by being connected to a usb power cable but don't have access to the usb hard drive.

Just wondered about people's thoughts and ideas for how Nintendo will implement this.

one of the many many questions i have.

i mean my iPhone is 256GB so i don't see how the switch won't have the same in Flash or SSD on board. i feel like nintendo are going to go the way of.. The entry is 32GB.

its a hard one.. especially with external HDD.. There is no way to move that content that fat from HDD to SSD/Flash.
its confirmed to be USB-C isn't it?

2018 Hit List: Shadow of the Colossus, Detroit, Dreams, Spider-Man, God Of War, Days Gone, Medievil, Tomb Raider 3, RDR2

Copying between HDD and MicroSDXC will not be fast enough to move even a 5GB file in the space of time you may decide you would like to go portable or not. Ideally, all the storage will be on the Switch tablet itself to prevent any excess complications in file management. This is also the only way to guarantee a seamless docked to portable state without compromising play time.

There is no HDD option for the Switch pretty sure LKD or Emily stated that.

Too many problems, the system would crash if it was trying to access an external HDD if someone picked it up and decided to "Switch" to portable mode. It doesn't work.

Right, I am not aware of any basis to assume there is external HD functionality.

Actually Laura and Emily reported there will not be external or external HDD support for Switch because problems you mentioned, having external or external HDD support for Switch wouldn't be practical and it would be complicated in any way, for now it seems it will have support only for Micro SD for storage.

Best to wait like 3 more days for your answer :p

One of the major drawbacks of having a "jack of all trades" system. Having external HDD support is going to cause more problems than it solves. Expect all games to be small or the only other option, you will need a micro SD card for every couple of games. Talking download games here.
