Is it time the forum section gets on overhaul to make it more like resetera or neogaf?

Thats more of a bandaid than a fix. Ultimately the problem that needs to be fixed is that a lot less people are viewing the main VGC site and no one in the media is using VGC numbers anymore. ioi needs to find a way to fix this to drive traffic to the site, which in turn makes people want to join the forum.

For starts they'd have to stop claiming to be trackers. Maybe if they classed themselves as a place that sources it's numbers based on other companies estimates and credited them. Then it could become used by the media again as it regains its reputation.

Hello everyone

so...

Jokes: Well, depends on the poster and specific words. Clear humor and innocent fun shouldn’t be instant grounds for moderation. Really does depend on context.

Trolling: Clearly baiting or visiting topics specifically to cause trouble (especially if you have a history of it).

Thank you.

Would you and the team consider a persons entire post history in the context of if a joke is harmless fun (thus, a simple joke) or done with malicious intent (thus, trolling)?

Nope :P

@Kerotan: Mods have told you who reported who to suit arguments? 🤔

What has caused the significant downturn? I've been frustrated with the amount of threads i've had to create lately to keep sales discussions going. I couldn't nobody had made a GTA V 100m sales thread after so many hours so i had to yet again go to the effort of making the thread. What's going on?

There's a bunch of different reasons for it.

- Poor site design and significant downtime.
- Lack of a quality mobile site.
- A lack of hardware and software numbers for a long, long time.
- Political poison seeping into the forum.
- The "console wars" haven't been exciting this generation.

Yeah the console war being won so early in the gen definitely hurt the site. Those political threads are cancer imo. There should just be 1 general politics thread. Keep it all in one place.

Imo, the cause of the downturn comes from a few things. I think the rise of big social media sites and other options like Discord have hurt VGC. ioi not updating the site for like a whole year or so made it so a lot of people left the site, not a lot joined during that time period, and then no one was then making articles about VGC numbers on other sites anymore after the numbers started to be posted again. So the visibility of this site is almost nothing anymore. We use to be able to replace every user that left with a new one, that 1 to 1 conversion doesn't happen anymore. One final issue I think is that the ads are so bad that it drives away a lot of the casual users away from the site.

Been seeing this a lot more in the last few days while going about the site, https://i.imgur.com/Vu9eHJf.png while navigating it's not too bad but like... that's because I'm a fairly dedicated user of the site, if a new user comes along and see's a site/forum being intermittantly up and down like this they're not going to stick around really.

If you look at when the decline of VGChartz started to get severe in Alexa ranking it was after the redesign started off here, site dropped from the 20k ranking or so down to 40k in the months after that started off, having an older looking site is one thing, but having a site which wasn't accessible at all was always going to have a severe negative impact on the visitors coming here.

Has to be understood as well that when adverts like this can pop up on the site https://i.imgur.com/yYjGXdd.png it becomes pretty much immediately a site which is NSFW because that type of pop up isn't something which is.... safe at least not in the place where I work, there was a period where I just couldn't risk logging in at work because of things like that.

Also on android when the adverts reload so frequently while viewing a page the shuffling of portions of the page up and down are very distracting as the adverts were never assigned to a fixed area which is reserved for them so on reloading the page and all its content can move making viewing the site fairly painful, again this is all stuff which the long term users here will see and shrug off so that we can get back to a thread we were taking part in, but new users are just not going to stay as they don't have the loyalty factor to stick around, it's as easy as that.

It's worth pointing out though, when it comes to people asking what they can do to make VGchartz raise in popularity again, if any of you guys are creating content on youtube feel free to mention this site in your videos or if you're someone who frequents wiki and edits articles over there why not inject a few links to VGchartz data where appropriate to back up facts on there but those links all provide extra pathways for users to funnel from Wiki over to VGchartz, it's all about traffic coming in and then holding onto any visitors with decent articles on the front page with up to date relevant news.

It's been 3 days since I asked for clarification on what the mod team considers to be classed as "Trolling" and 2 days since I prodded CGI for further clarification and I've had no actual answers.

So I'll just bring up a post.

⚠️ WARNED: Trolling ~ CGI

Can someone, anyone on the mod team tell me how exactly this is classed as trolling outside of offering a negative opinion on a popular videogame, particularly when said user has no history of trouble causing?

It completely contradicts what CGI-Quality said in his last post - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8917529

Probably the use of lol. Comes across as drive by shit posting no? He could have said, "boring game imo, unfortunately it will win GOTY"

Instead "boring game lol (laugh out loud) unfortunately will win game of the year".

Maybe another reason but that's probably it.

If i say "Carl you suck at that game LOL" it comes across a lot more trollish then if I say "hey Carl, imo you suck at that game". And more importantly I should back up why I think you suck. Provide evidence. The same I presume applies here. Why is GOW boring. Other wise it's just lazy and can take the thread down the rabbit hole.

If that was true, it would take us back to context and the users history, in which case Mason has no history of antagonistic behavior. Quite the opposite, actually. He's mainly a positive poster.

Also, that wasn't the reason. He was moderated because he didn't want God of War to win Game of the Year.

I won’t be responding to anything regarding that post. You can PM me or email us for a discussion on that moderation.

As for Trolling, I can respond again. A post or poster that...

[baits users, needlessly attacks platforms, enters topics deliberately looking to start fights/problems and/or has a minimal-to-strong history of any of those things].

I'll PM you about that one so I can give some clarification to the community and bring up another contradiction while I have your attention. Mainly on your definition of trolling. "Baits users, enters topics to start fights" being the key parts.

___

Back in September we had a bunch of threads quite clearly aimed at baiting users and annoying people or "starting fights".

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=237754

 http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=237777

Both posted within a day of each other, one thread was clearly made to bait Sony fans and one was created to bait a bunch of people with fake outrage and be a cheerleader for Sony with nothing but anecdotal posts to rile people up.

Here's how you responded to the anti-Sony one - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8890959

CGI-Quality said:

I’m not against the idea of looking at these devices as responses to past devices, but this thread just feels totally unnecessary. After a brief discussion with other mods, we’ve concluded that this doesn’t need to go on and invite an inevitable fight on the site.

Good job, you locked the silly bait thread.

Your response to the pro-Sony thread? Here - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8890265

CGI-Quality said:

Guys....enough.

You... Protected the bait thread and ignored peoples calls to challenge the OP.

This isn't just evidence of bias in your decision making when it comes to Sony/PlayStation related stuff, along with the above Mason decision, but evidence on top that you (or whoever has been in your ear on these decisions) simply do not understand what trolling actually is. That's a frightening thought when it's a standard moderator, never mind an actual head moderator.

Now, I'll PM you about the Mason moderation.

Will you be applying to rejoin the mod team Carl next time around? Sounds like you are still very much interested in the role.

I don't think so. Not under current circumstances.

Gee a mod being biased unprecedented
