Do you agree?

Yes! 39 15.79%

Nope! 208 84.21%

The only game on there I agree with is Pokemon. Other than that, IGN and I disagree.

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Also as far the people choice goes:
PC-People's Choice - Overwatch
XB1-People's Choice - Gears of War 4
PS4-People's Choice - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Vita-People's Choice - World of Final Fantasy
WiiU-People's Choice - Pokken Tournament

3ds-People's Choice - Pokemon Sun/Moon
Mobile-People's Choice - Pokemon Go

Overall-People's Choice - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Didn't see that one coming, kind of forgot that game existed. If you want additional pain then look at the games in each catergory, somehow The Division is a RPG nominee.

It kind of seems they liked the PC version so much more, considering Overwatch didn't win on Xbox One and PS4 despite being available on both. My interpretation about the results is that Inside and Dishonored 2 were better than Overwatch on consoles (according to IGN of course), but Overwatch was still their GotY because of the PC version.

Anyway, this clearly doesn't hold up to any closer inspection, mainly because of Inside and Overwatch 2. They're both available on both consoles, and as far as I know, both are games good on both consoles, yet Inside won only on Xbox One and Dishonored 2 won only on PS4. Doesn't make much sense to me. And then there's the Overwatch thing, which is also quite... interesting: best on PC, not on consoles? Personally I can agree to that since it's a shooter, but that's still a pretty interesting choice.

Not uncommon for award honors to follow the logic of handing out consolation trophies instead of awarding the same thing multiple times. So you can also have overall game of the year winners that didn't win the category of their own genre.

To be fair, IGN isn't that hopeless, yet. At least the top platform winners also won one other catergory, but how they assigned some games to certain genres is very questionable.

Edit: Misunderstood your post.

Yep. Thats why I mentioned that they should had gone with another game as PC game of the year. Maybe there should not be different categories per platform or at least just have PC, Console and Handheld/Mobile.

It seems IGN thought Overwatch was the only GotY candicate on PC then. Yeah, I know what you mean, but IGN's logic is still inconsistent unless they really thought Overwatch was the only possible PC GotY this year, which I really doubt (there were a lot of great PC games this year).

See, having micro-transactions might seem a bit urghh worthy but then if you think about what you are getting in return, I'd say its worth it. Because what everyone is getting in return for those micro-transactions is free DLC which includes heroes, maps and modes for the life of the game. And since it is a Blizzard game, given their long history of supporting games for a really long time with content, the free heroes, maps and modes should continue to come for a very long time. It is also $40 on PC but $60 on consoles.

The other thing is, the lootboxes probably seem pretty lame at first but no one is being forced to buy them in order to enjoy the game. The enjoyment doesn't come from skins, the enjoyment comes from the gameplay. And the lootboxes aren't that hard to obtain. Playing and winning arcade mode games gives you 3 lootboxes per week and leveling up gives you lootboxes too. Now the question is, which one would people rather have? Parts of the game such as maps and etc locked behind $15 dlc or Cosmetics that are locked behind easily attainable lootboxes? Cause supporting the game for a really long time doesn't come for free so yes, people would have to choose one or the other. In a magical world, we wouldn't need to but in reality, we do hence why every game either has one or the other or has both.

I personally like Overwatch's implementation because it doesn't segment off the player base into chunks that have the dlc and the ones that don't. I have been playing overwatch since the day I got it and I have not spent a single dime. I got all the skins and sprays and emotes that I care about and I have a shit ton of gold doing nothing.

So I for one say that if games of the future implement overwatch's system where we get free dlc such as maps and etc for the life of the game with micro-transaction for cosmetic items that is as easily attainable as they are in overwatch, then I am 110% on board. What I don't want is cosmectics locked behind real world money or currency that isn't easily attainable and dlc that segments off the players who don't want to spend extra money on the game. I will say that trying to get the skin you want in overwatch from the start can be annoying certainly since the lootboxes are random but I say the trade-off is still worth it.

The game should have been free as was initially planned, with all revenue coming from the loot crates. But of course Blizzard wanted the megabux. There's no defending the model tbh no matter how good the game is. For example, I haven't spent a dime on DotA 2 and Path of Exile.

I just don't want it to become the industry norm.

It being free probably would have meant that it would have heroes locked behind a paywall wouldn't have worked with the gameplay.

http://kotaku.com/why-overwatch-isnt-free-to-play-1741226130

F2P game like this wouldn't have been able to keep the updates going with cosmetic items alone hence why no one does it like that. How many successful F2P game only has cosmetic items as its only form of income and gives everything else for free?

And I would want it to be the industry norm if the industry does it the way that blizzard did it. Like with call of Duty for example... Pay $60 and you get all the map pack dlc which would usually cost an extra $50 on top of the $60 in trade of skins being locked behind micro-transactions which are also attainable via unlocking lootboxes which aren't that hard to get just by playing the game.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Half that list is garbage, not the games themselves, but. Gears or Forza should be for Xbox, PlayStation should be U4 or The Last Guardian, and I seriously doubt Overwatch was the best game on PC this year (though I'm fine with it being GOTY overall). Sun & Moon sounds about right and the rest of that looks okay.

Boo. Can't believe this was the GOTY at the game awards either. I would rather see Uncharted 4 as GOTY vs Overwatch...

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Overwatch didn't earn game of the year, it just got it because of the Blizzard Effect (unpopular opinion).

Also, Dishonored 2 for PS4 GotY makes me laugh. They know Uncharted 4 launched in 2016, right?

This is the problem with modern day business practices. It ruins games that have similar ideals and makes them get a negative reception. When I ask people why they don't think Overwatch should have won game of the year, they say "Because it's multiplayer only" or when they react to a list they say "Really? A game without a campaign gets Game of the Year? Good job generic website xxx..."

This to me is completely founded around other video games of the past that are multiplayer only. That's the only reason people are chalking their dislike up to it being multiplayer only. If this was Battlefield much less people would have a problem with it. The reality is ... a game being multiplayer only shouldn't disqualify it. In fact, i genuinely believe that this might be the best new game of the year. I've had more fun with just over 20+ hours in this game than any other game of the year, with Rise of the Tomb Raider(PC) and Doom being the only close ones.

So yes Overwatch does deserve game of the year ... the other stuff is a bit dumb. Honestly, Tomb Raider was the best game to be released on the PS4 this year, much better than Uncharted 4.
