Forums - Gaming - Ex-Ubisoft Dev: Direct ports from PS4/Xbox One to Nintendo Switch not possible

It's obvious. You can't port a game to a console 3 to 4 times less powerful just by activating a magical "less powerful console" mode. PS3 and X360 would still have games if it was possible.

At this point, Im not believing anything. There are so many contradicting rumors. Some say is hard to port, but then NVidia(I think they said that in their press release in october) and says is easy to port stuff...

Someone is lying their ass out.Im stay optimistic and say this dev is just speculating, since in the OP he says "may",something the OP "accidentaly" forgot to put in the title. But we will see what will be true in the 12th.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

To be fair, there aren't that many big western AAA games that have the potential of selling well on the Switch. The only one I can think of is Skyrim, because it can catter to the Zelda userbase and it's the first portable TES game. This system will get tons of A-AA games (both western and eastern) and last gen remasters, which will be a big step from the WiiU's support.

I think GTA could do well. Its just a universally loved franchise.

A ground up new GTA Chinatown Wars did very bad in Nintendo DS and Rockstar later had to port in PSP and Smartphones.

Yeah and it didnt do well on the PSP either. I dont think you can compare Chinatown Wars to a console GTA.

Well, very bad is debatable. Around two million between DS and PSP is a great number for any game, but T2 wants huge numbers for every GTA released, even from the 2D, top-down perspective ones, which have not been popular since GTA II. A moderate success is a failure in their eyes.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I know some folks will celebrate this and others will mourn this, but listen: Nintendo is making the right choice with under-powered hardware. PS4/XOne level tech would be a mistake because 1) it would bump up manufacturing costs which would in turn make the Switch more expensive to the consumers (as Nintendo doesn't have the non-gaming revenue to offset selling at a loss); 2) Nintendo's first parties don't require the extra horsepower for their games and the fans don't either (the sales of SD games on Wii, DS, and 3DS prove as much); and 3) Nintendo doesn't need the Arkham Knights and Battlefields of the world to succeed. A steady supply of Nintendo software output, guaranteed by the merger of console and handheld development, and the same third party support that defined the DS and 3DS will do the trick.

I know a lot of folks think prestigious titles like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty (and thus the hardware needed to support them) are required for a successful console, but Nintendo has proven that theory wrong. Better for Nintendo to remain self-sufficient than to adopt a design philosophy that would throw it into a self-destructive arms race with Sony and Microsoft, which have the deep pockets to subsidize expensive hardware and, frankly, need third parties much more desperately than Nintendo.

I think the Switch doesn't need third party mainstream games anyway, but rather custom games made specific for the audience to go along Nintendo's own games.

Is this from a person who worked on the NS or just a comment on those spec rumours again?
Story is not very clear on that point.

Isnt the main goal to expand the audience? Only making games for the WiiU and 3DS crowd might not be a good idea.

Yes, you are right, but then again I don't think that Nintendo will EVER regain some die hard Playstation or Xbox fans. They should instead regain some casuals, and as far as I know, the initial Switch trailer received a quite positive reception within these consumers.
