They also said that "DS won't replace GBA" and "NX isn't a successor to WiiU". Unless Switch fails, I don't think there will be a separate Nintendo handheld. |
Yup, they also said that the original 3DS was fine as it is 2 weeks before unveiling the 3DS XL. Its best not to take their PR talk at face value

The Switch won't fail because it will be sold at a profit out of the gate. Kimishima-san said so. But the Switch is just one revenue stream and Nintendo's mobile games will be the other. Nintendo will still have two pillars, Switch and mobile. So in a way smart phones are the 3DS successor.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!
Switch FC: SW-0398-8858-1969
I can see a smaller sku without the dock but I doubt they will release an entirely different product line
PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850
The way I see it, the Switch will be replacing it. It doesn't seem wise to release one when the Switch will be tackling both console and portable in one device.

| RolStoppable said: Amazing how shitty gaming journalism is, running a headline that doesn't accurately reflect the statement anymore. And no, Nintendo didn't say the same thing about the DS. Anyway, the answer to the thread's question is March 2017. Switch is the 3DS's successor. |
I wouldn't call it a direct successor till the Switch Mini releases which has a similar form factor of the DS lineage but plays Switch games.

What does similar form factor mean? Two screens? That's not going to happen. Size? Switch is about as big as a folded 3DS XL. |
I semi struggle to get the New 3DS XL in my pocket sometimes and I'm a big guy with usually deep pockets on my pants. Switch might be portable but it is only semi portable. I bring my 3DS to work with me to play during breaks but I don't think I would ever bring the Switch. Same could almost be said about 2DS which aren't too portable considering you gotta lug it around in a case. I'm sure plenty of people will lug the Switch around in a case or backpack but I probably won't be one of them. I'd like to have a Switch that is smaller and actually pocket portable perhaps if not in the form factor of DS then make it like a PSP or Vita.
