Forums - Nintendo - How do you feel about the difficulty in Pokémon games?

People need to realize that POKEMON IS TARGETED TOWARDS KIDS.

If you want difficulty, play competitively or go through a Nuzlocke. I know nuzlockes in gen VII are ridiculously hard, so have fun with that if you need a challenging pokemon game.

I don't think that anyone is suggesting that Pokémon be made tougher on kids.

I've never cared about pokemon's difficulty but they are fairly easy games, especially sun and moon I feel like it's one of the easiest. I wouldn't mind difficulty options tho.

They're easy if you let the game be easy: if you turn off the Exp. share, and turn off the possibility to switch pokémon once you're told what Pokémon the opponent will send out you're already up for a mildly challenging game, on top of that you can apply dozzens of restrictions that make the game harder such as the Nuzloke rules or using only the items found in the wild/given to you by NPCs without buying them.

That beeing said a Difficulty selection is needed and imho will soon be implemented now that Game Freak can work on the Switch...

Exp. Share doesn't make the games easier; it makes them conventient. Look at SMT for proof.

The Exp. Share gives you more exp than you would normally get when turned on so yes, yes it makes the game easier on the long run. I got proof of this when I exchanged my opinions with a friend of mine who played Moon a few weeks after I played Sun and, despite not beeing that big of a Pokémon player, he said the game was super easy and that he reached the end with a team at level 70 without grinding since he left it active while on the other hand I finished the game (same thing with no grinding ) ended up with a team of level 55-60 which made the last island and the league quite challenging since I wasn't overleveled and the AI was working properly...

I haven't played much of Sun/Moon, but the games have felt pretty easy overall. My problem with it is that the solution to beating anything in pokemon is just too easy. Either you grind until you're stronger than the opponent, or get the right typing to beat them. You can always stock up on items so you won't ever lose either.

I'm not really sure how to make it more difficult. Perhaps set certain rules on certain battles, like 'no items', or maybe give certain strategies to opponents or gym leaders that give the player a challenge. I remember Whittney and her miltank being a really tough time in Gold/Silver, so maybe something like that? I dunno.

Either way, this hasn't really be a problem for me. I still enjoyed pokemon nonetheless, and my solution these days has been to just nuzlocke the game my 1st time. It made X/Y way more exciting for me when I played it.

Have 2 difficulty option normal and hard in hard you can have:
1- Increase the level of pokemons.
2-Eliminate exp share or make it available in post game
3-Eliminate the game telling you which pokemon the opponent is going to use.
4-Make the amount of pokemons you can use in battle, equal to your opponents.

Stop being so damn dramatic all the time.

People confuse "challenging" and "hard". Something can be made to be challenging without necessarily being difficult. Lets use Pokemon as an example! Elite Four vs regular trainers - Is E4 hard? No, but are they more challenging and competent than a regular trainer or gym leader? Yes.

I'm happy with the current level of difficulty personally. That being said, I don't see why Gamefreak hasn't implemented multiple difficulty settings yet, after all the complaints they've received about it being too easy. It's really not that hard to make easy, normal, and hard settings, just increase the levels of the enemy Pokemon you encounter at any given point in the game based on which setting you pick, would take barely any effort at all. And it wouldn't take that much extra effort to improve enemy AI a bit on the higher difficulty settings, if they were so inclined.

This is the lazy half assed way. It doesn't have to be increased increase, like chaging enemy trainer Pokemon move sets to give idea that the trainer has damn sense would be cool. Making enemy Pokemon more agressive about targeting weaknesses.

Look at Pokemon Staduim!  It could get pretty tough because enemy Pokemon were agressive abusive your weakness if they the ability too.

I'd like to second this, I would like to see trainers have better tactics and strategies too. I thought S/M was a good step in that direction, there were a few battles that I had a lot of fun against because it felt like the computer was trying to beat me instead of choosing random moves.

Again, though, that isn't making the game easier, it's just eliminating grind. There are a lot of elements that contribute to Pokémon being easy. Leveling is not one of them.

You can reach the end of any Pokemon game at level 70. It just means that you have to grind. Grinding isn't difficult - it's just boring and time consuming.

Again, look at SMT for proof. It's compared to Dark Souls in regards to difficulty, and it has a similar mechanic where all demons recieve EXP, even if they aren't in your active party. The difficulty that exp provides is artificial. Pokemon is easy for a whole other slew of mechanical design reasons.

I am a huge fan of letting people play the way they like it so there should just be difficulty levels.

A highlight for me was the Grass Totem battle.
