Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo Allow Full Clock Tegra Portably With Power?

Since the dock includes extra cooling, it won't reach maximum power unless docked. I don't think Nintendo would add a 3rd extra mode for "dockless but charging" since it would be too much hassle for devs.

What extra cooling is in the dock? all rumors state the dock is just a hunk of plastic with connectors. The fan and everything is in the device, not the dock.

Most likely not. Heat is definitely an issue and then there is the different resolution displays. I don't think the Switch will be able to switch into docked mode unless it detects an HDMI device plugged in.
Games in undocked mode will probably be scaled down anyway so I don't think the additional power will make much of a performance or visual difference.

It uses USB-C not HDMI to the device and the system has active cooling which is why when docked it will remain cool. (kicks the fan on which is inside the tablet device)

The point of OP question is, if it is plugged in then what reason would it NOT be running in "docked" mode? aka - fan kicks on and everything is pushing the highest power while still charging the battery, all of which is what happens when it is docked.

Adding to my post above... would it really matter considering that the screen is 6.2" and 720p?

You know what also happens when it's docked? The screen turns off aka display information gets send through USB/HDMI.

Of course it is technologically possible but I doubt Nintendo would bother with all the implications and just hardwire it into the system.

That's a good point. Just triggering docked mode wouldn't be all that is needed, it would need to leave on the screen/speakers/etc. Screen adds its own heat as well.

As I mentioned above, I wonder if its even necessary. Small 720p screen seems like it wouldn't need/want it to upscale to docked power mode.

Nintendo knows users are stupid so giving them the option to fry their NS is not a good idea .

That will be a good selling point actually. Buy Switch and you get a console capable to fry your food

The dock does look like a toaster.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Switch FC: SW-0398-8858-1969

Could be something I could see hackers trying to do ("trick" the system into thinking it's docked when it's not).

Laura Dale thinks it's possible but only as a developer choice so would be dependent on the game,

Kinda wondered this, we know the Switch apparently has two power modes, docked (reportedly about 384 GFLOPS) and undocked on battery power (150 GFLOPS or so).

What happens though in situations where you're on an airplane or train that has a USB power out or even a full plug in power socket? Or if you have an external battery pak which connects to the USB-C port? Would the game downclock no matter want?

I wonder if you can run the games at full fidelity in portable mode that way or if Nintendo will gimp/cut that feature because they don't want a device getting too hot/warm in a person's (specifically a kids) hands.

Oh man, still 18  painful days to go.

All I hope is that they clarify everything in the presentation. If they don´t, expect the worst brother, and by that I mean low specs.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

"Plugging the system into the dock will also activate a small additional fan to help with cooling when run at that higher clock speed. This fan is in the rear of the dock, and there is a gap in the back of the dock to allow the system’s inbuilt fans to vent when docked."

At least I understood that there's a fan in the dock, in addition to gaps to allow the internal fans to keep working.

It's really just the VR visor that needs docked performance and the tablet slides into that so the same docked recognition could operate in that anyway so effectively VR and docked is full performance and portable is always 150 gflops even with an external usb power connection.

You could render at 1080p internally and downscale to the 720p screen to give a marginal image improvement but its not going to be a huge difference in quality on such a small screen so probably not worth doing. However there are other options like wireless display where you could take you Switch with you and without a dock send a 1080p image to a tv but from my experience this is very laggy and not good enough for games. However it worked on wii u and later versions improve on this. I've only tried it from android tablet to tv but it wasn't great. Fine for movies and non-interactive stuff though.

That is a misunderstanding from that site. The fan is in the NS itself. The dock just has holes/vents to allow the air to pass through the NS. Dock is just a hunk of plastic with connectors.
